Chapter 17 - The Second Key

Lena stared at Clara, her heart hammering against her ribs. "A second key? What are you talking about? Rafael never mentioned a sister to me—he said his family was gone."

"He had to protect me," Clara said, her voice shaking as she unzipped her bag and pulled out a heavy, lead-shielded metal cylinder. "When the federal black-ops teams started hunting down his medical ethics board, they didn't just want the financial logs. They wanted the biological ledger."

Lena stepped closer, her clinical curiosity overriding her shock. "What biological ledger?"

Clara unscrewed the cap of the cylinder and slid out a glass containment vial holding a microscopic silver microchip embedded in synthetic tissue. "Rafael wasn't just treating agents and laundering money. He was contracted by the Department of Defense to run unauthorized clinical trials on synthetic neural regeneration. The same technology they used to create un-killable, compliant field operatives."

The pieces clicked together in Lena’s mind with terrifying clarity. "That's why he was executed. Not because of a financial audit... but because he threatened to expose human experimentation."

"And now they know I have the master synthesis data," Clara said, grabbing Lena’s arm with desperate intensity. "Which means they tracked me here. To this exact building."

Before Lena could answer, the emergency lockdown klaxon blared overhead, bathing the entire underground medical facility in flashing crimson light.
