Chapter 9 - Dawn at the Safehouse

The digital clock on the medical console flashed red: 04:15 AM.
Lena stood in front of the stainless steel sink, staring at her reflection in the mirror. The filthy hoodie was gone, replaced by a clean, black tactical jumpsuit that fit her gaunt frame snugly. Her hair was tied back tightly, and her hands—once shaking with terror—were steady as she strapped a surgical scalpel holster to her forearm.
She was no longer the invisible girl eating scraps behind La Serenata. She was a surgeon operating on a dying city.
Marco stepped into the room, sliding a heavy-caliber automatic pistol into his shoulder holster. His face was set in grim lines. "The perimeter sensors just tripped. Federal black-ops teams are breaching the upper gallery of the art gallery. They bypassed local law enforcement entirely."
"How many?" Lena asked, her voice eerily calm.
"Twelve men. Fully equipped, thermal optics, suppression gear," Marco replied, grabbing a tactical tablet from the desk. "They think they're walking into a quiet execution."
"They're walking into a trap," Lena corrected, tapping a series of commands onto the terminal screen. "This estate was built as an old bank vault during the Prohibition era. The ventilation shafts on the lower level run directly beneath the central display hall."
Marco’s eyes narrowed in sudden, sharp appreciation. "You're going to use the medical gas lines."
"It's a modified paralytic compound Dr. Guzman and I synthesized for emergency trauma field extraction," Lena said, a cold, sharp smile touching the corners of her lips. "Non-lethal for the first ten minutes, but it completely paralyzes the central nervous system. They won't even feel their fingers drop their weapons."
"Do it," Marco commanded.

As the muffled sound of heavy explosions echoed from the upper floors, signaling the federal breach, Lena slammed her palm down on the master override button.
Below the floorboards, a low hiss whispered through the hidden vents, carrying an invisible, odorless vapor upward into the galleries above.
