Chapter 10 - The Last Incision

The battle for the estate lasted less than three minutes.
Thud. Thud. Thud.
One by one, the elite federal operators breaching the lower corridor collapsed like felled timber, their heavy body armor clattering loudly against the marble tile as the paralytic agent took immediate effect.
Marco stepped out of the command bunker with two armed guards, sweeping his weapon through the smoke-filled hallway. Not a single shot had been fired on their end. Twelve heavily armed federal agents lay paralyzed on the floor, blinking up in helpless terror at the ceiling.
At the center of the corridor stood the strike team leader—a senior DOJ official whose badge identified him as Director Cole. He was struggling against the paralysis, his breathing shallow, his eyes wide with blind panic as Marco approached him.
Marco crouched down beside Cole, his expression devoid of mercy. He pulled the military flash drive from his pocket and tapped it against the director's cheek.
"You picked the wrong dog to kill, Director," Marco whispered softly.
He stood up and looked back toward the medical suite.
Dr. Lena Ortiz walked out into the corridor. She wasn't running anymore. Her posture was straight, her steps measured and deliberate. She walked past the paralyzed federal agents who had hunted her for eight months, looking down at Director Cole with the cold, detached eyes of a master surgeon preparing for a complex amputation.
"We're going to make a public broadcast," Lena said, her voice cutting cleanly through the silence of the vault. "Every news station, every independent journalist, every medical board in the country. The entire archive goes live in sixty seconds."
Marco nodded once, signaling his communications tech to initiate the upload.
On thousands of television screens and smartphones across the city, the encrypted data stream broke through government firewalls, broadcasting the security footage of Detective Vance executing Dr. Guzman straight to the world.
As the sirens began to wail in the distance—not of corrupt local police, but of federal investigators forced to respond to an open, un-deletable public data leak—Lena felt the cold weight finally lift from her chest.
She looked down at her hands. They didn't shake. They had saved a puppy in a restaurant, and now, they had just saved the truth.
Marco walked up beside her, offering a rare, respectful nod. "What do you plan to do now, Doctor? You're far too dangerous to stay hidden in an alley."

Lena turned her gaze toward the rising sun breaking over the city skyline, the first warm light of February touching her face.
"I'm going back to work," she said.
