Chapter 8 - The Price of Redemption

The subterranean medical suite beneath Marco Lombardi’s estate looked less like a hideout and more like a private trauma center. State-of-the-art diagnostic monitors hummed softly against sterile white walls, a stark contrast to the damp, freezing tunnels Lena had called home for the past eight months.

A middle-aged nurse in scrubs bustled over immediately, handing Lena a warm towel and a cup of steaming black coffee. Lena took them automatically, her eyes wide as she stared at the surgical trays gleaming under halogen lights.

"Drink it," Marco instructed, shedding his overcoat and tossing it to a waiting guard. He walked over to a secure computer terminal built into the stainless steel counter and plugged in the military-grade flash drive Lena had handed him.

A cascading wall of encrypted data illuminated his face in a harsh green glow. Files, video logs, audio transcripts, and bank routings scrolled past at breakneck speed.

"Can you decrypt the master file?" Marco asked, glancing back at her.

Lena set the coffee down, walked over to the terminal, and pushed him aside with surprising authority. Her fingers hovered over the mechanical keyboard for a split second before flying across the keys in a blur of practiced rhythm. She entered a sequence of alphanumeric coordinates—a cipher based on human anatomical structures that only she and Dr. Guzman had ever used.

Access Granted.

A high-definition security recording popped onto the screen, timestamped eight months ago to the exact night Dr. Guzman was murdered.

The camera angle was high, looking down from the parking lot light fixture of St. Jude's Hospital. They watched in silence as Dr. Guzman walked out to his car. A sleek, unmarked sedan pulled up beside him. Two men stepped out—not cartel enforcers in cheap suits, but clean-cut federal agents in tactical windbreakers.

And standing right behind them, holding the silenced pistol, was Detective Vance.

They didn't ask for files. They didn't negotiate. Vance raised his weapon and fired three execution-style shots into Dr. Guzman’s chest, grabbed a briefcase from the backseat, and drove away into the night.

Lena felt the breath leave her lungs. A low, ragged sob escaped her lips as the terrible weight of the past eight months came crashing down on her shoulders. She hadn't been hiding from the mafia. She had been hiding from the United States government.

Marco stepped up beside her, placing a heavy, solid hand on her trembling shoulder. There was no pity in his touch—only a cold, absolute resolve.

"They killed your mentor," Marco said quietly, his voice like grinding stone. "And they framed my syndicate to start a turf war that would let them wipe us both out."

He turned the screen toward her, revealing an incoming encrypted transmission originating directly from the Department of Justice headquarters in Washington, D.C.

"They know we have the drive," Marco continued. "And they're sending an extermination squad to clean house by sunrise. We have four hours, Dr. Ortiz. We can either run... or we can strike back."
