Chapter 7 - Inside the Vault

The interior of Marco Lombardi’s armored SUV felt like a rolling tomb. Lena’s trembling fingers fumbled with the zipper of her frayed canvas backpack, the heavy lead-foil pouch sliding clumsily into her lap.

Marco watched her with unblinking curiosity, his expression unreadable. "You hauled that around through the sewer pipes for eight months without even knowing what was inside?"

"Dr. Guzman told me to run and never open it unless I had no other choice," Lena whispered, her voice cracking as she peeled back the layers of lead foil.

She pulled out a ruggedized, matte-black military flash drive alongside a small, leather-bound diary with scorched edges.

Marco reached out, taking the diary gently from her hands. He flipped open the cover, his dark eyes scanning the frantic, handwritten medical logs and financial transaction codes scrawled across the pages. As he read further, the color slowly drained from his face—a reaction so profound that even his stoic bodyguards in the front seat glanced back in alarm.

"It's not just a cartel ledger," Marco murmured, his voice uncharacteristically rough. "It's a federal audit trail."

"What does that mean?" Lena asked, clutching the flash drive to her chest.

"It means Dr. Guzman wasn't laundering money for us," Marco said, looking up to meet her eyes directly. "He was treating undercover federal agents who were using our syndicate as a front for illegal weapons trafficking—and skimming millions from the Department of Justice black budget to fund unauthorized operations."

Lena’s jaw dropped. "That's impossible. Dr. Guzman was a surgeon, not a criminal mastermind."

"He was a patriot who got caught in a machine much bigger than either of us," Marco replied, closing the diary with a sharp snap. "And Detective Vance wasn't investigating his murder. Vance was the cleaner who managed the internal affairs cover-up. That sniper back on the pier wasn't trying to save you, Dr. Ortiz. He was trying to erase the last loose end."

The SUV slowed to a smooth stop, pulling through a massive wrought-iron security gate hidden behind an upscale private art gallery in the heart of the financial district.

"Welcome to my home, Doctor," Marco said as the vehicle doors unlocked. "You're safer here than anywhere else in this city. Because whoever wants you dead now wants me dead, too."
