Chapter 20 - The Shocking Twist Ending

Dominic lowered his rifle, his shoulders slumping, his face covered in rain and tears. He looked back at Clara and his two daughters, feeling an overwhelming weight of defeat.
“He won, Clara,” Dominic whispered hoarsely. “He has the money, he has Marco, and he has our house rigged to explode. I can't risk firing at that helicopter.”
Clara didn't look defeated. In fact, a slow, cold smile spread across her face.
She pulled a small black touchscreen device from her tactical pouch and tapped a green icon.
Suddenly, a loud burst of static filled the tactical radio, followed by Dr. Vance’s terrified screaming over the open channel:
“WHAT IS THIS?! THE CONTROLS ARE LOCKED! THE ALTITUDE IS DROPPING! WHAT DID YOU DO?!”
Dominic stared at Clara in complete shock. “Clara… what did you do?”
Clara walked up beside her husband, slipping her hand into his.
“Dominic… do you really think I spent four years under sedation doing nothing?” she asked softly.
She tapped the screen again, bringing up a live internal feed of Vance’s helicopter.
“Dr. Vance thought he was manipulating us,” Clara said into her comms mic. “He didn't realize that I discovered his real identity three years ago. I knew he was a Castiglione. I let him think his plan was working so he would gather Marco, the master ledger, and all forty billion dollars into one single place.”
On the screen, Vance was screaming in panic as the helicopter’s autopilot locked onto a landing pad—not in international waters, but directly inside the courtyard of the Interpol High-Security Headquarters in Rome!
“The charges under our house were replaced with dummy foam weeks ago, Dominic,” Clara continued, her eyes burning with brilliant genius. “And the helicopter he just stole? It belongs to the Federal Task Force. I signed a immunity plea deal with Interpol six months ago. Vance just delivered himself, Marco Valenti, and forty billion dollars of illegal syndicate money straight into federal custody.”
Dominic stared at his wife, completely speechless. The feared mob boss was utterly outmatched by the tactical brilliant mind of the woman he loved.
“So… the syndicate is gone?” Dominic whispered.
“Destroyed. Completely,” Clara smiled, wrapping her arm around his waist. “Vance and Marco will spend the rest of their natural lives in a dark cell. The Moretti empire is legally liquidated. We are free, Dominic. Truly free.”
Five years later.
A sun-drenched beach on a private island in the South Pacific. White sand stretched as far as the eye could see.
Ten-year-old Lily and ten-year-old Iris were splashing in the turquoise waves, their laughter ringing out under the bright blue sky. They looked like normal, happy twins—the dark memories of brainwashing and mafia wars entirely washed away by years of love and peaceful living.
Dominic sat on a wooden porch deck, sipping black coffee, watching his daughters play. He wore plain linen clothes—no weapons, no suits, no armored vests.
Clara walked out, leaning her head on his shoulder, taking a sip from his cup.
“Thinking about the past?” she asked softly.
“No,” Dominic smiled, pulling her close and kissing her forehead. “Thinking about how a barefoot three-year-old knocking on my door at midnight saved my life.”
Far away across the world, inside a high-security prison in Rome, Dr. Vance sat in a windowless cell.
A guard slid a tray of food through the slot. Vance picked up his bread, breaking it in half. Inside was a tiny rolled note.
Vance opened it with trembling hands. Written on the paper were three words that made his blood turn to ice:
May you like
“See you soon.”
Signed with a tiny drawing of a stuffed rabbit.
