Chapter 2 - THE SHADOW IN THE VAULT

Panic erupted in the darkness above. Victoria shrieked as a heavy thud echoed through the main room, followed by the sound of her knife clattering uselessly across the marble floor.

"Leo! Get down here!" Madam Eleanor’s voice echoed not from the top of the stairs, but from inside the vault entrance behind him.

Leo whirled around in confusion. How did she get past Victoria in the dark?

He rushed deeper into the underground staircase as emergency red strobe lights kicked on, painting the walls in crimson hues. At the bottom of the stairs lay a subterranean chamber that defied imagination. It wasn't just a safe; it was an underground fortress filled with historic artifacts, banks of servers glowing with blue LED lights, and glass cases containing legendary lost gemstones.

In the center of the room sat Madam Eleanor, sitting calmly in an identical wheelchair.

"How... how did you get down here so fast?" Leo panted, his chest heaving.

"The woman upstairs isn't me," Madam Eleanor said smoothly. "That was my body double, an animatronic proxy I've used for public appearances since the assassination attempt ten years ago. Victoria thought she was threatening a helpless old lady. She was actually threatening two hundred pounds of metal and synthetic skin."

Leo stared at her, utterly stunned. "Who are you really?"

"I am the architect of this city," she replied. "And you, Leo Vance, are not just a random stock boy. Do you really think it was a coincidence that you were hired here three months ago?"

Leo’s eyes widened. "What are you talking about? I applied online! I was broke, sleeping in my car!"

"Your application was selected out of ten thousand applicants because of your bloodline," Eleanor said, pressing a button on her armrest. A massive holographic screen bloomed in the center of the vault.

It displayed a dusty, black-and-white photograph from 1950. In the photo stood two young men standing in front of the very first Sterling Jewelry store. One was Eleanor's father. The other man bore a face that looked terrifyingly identical to Leo.

"My grandfather..." Leo whispered, stepping closer to the hologram.

"Arthur Vance," Eleanor confirmed. "Co-founder of the Sterling Empire. Thirty years ago, my corrupt Board of Directors framed your grandfather, stole his shares, and cast your family into poverty. He died penniless, while they grew into billionaires."

Leo felt a surge of rage and confusion wash over him. "So this whole thing... the runaway wheelchair, the pearl necklace... it was all a setup?"

"It was a test," Eleanor corrected. "I needed to see if Arthur's blood ran true. If you had ignored me like the rest of the rich parasites in that room, I would have let you live your quiet life. But you dived to save a falling old woman. You knelt to pick up worthless pearls while millionaires stepped over them. You possess the one trait the Sterling Corporation lost decades ago: humanity."

Suddenly, the heavy obsidian vault doors behind them began to groan.

SCREEECH.

The metal roared under extreme force. Through the security camera feed on the screen, Leo saw Victoria standing at the top of the stairs, surrounded by six men dressed in tactical black gear, holding industrial blowtorches and hydraulic rams.

"They're breaching the vault," Eleanor said calmly, though her eyes hardened. "Victoria has called in the Board's private security contractor, 'The Vanguard.' They don't want the key, Leo. They came to erase the Vance bloodline once and for all."
