Chapter 5 - Entering the CageThe transition from a rotting, electricity-less trailer to Sterling Manor felt like stepping onto an alien planet.

The estate sat behind three-inch-thick wrought iron gates atop the highest hill in the city, surrounded by manicured obsidian-black lawns and guarded by armed patrols and motion-sensing turret cameras.

When the Maybach rolled up to the grand front entrance, double oak doors swung open automatically. A row of four impeccably dressed household staff stood waiting in rigid formation.

"Welcome home, Master Noah, Master Caleb," an elderly butler with razor-sharp posture said smoothly. His name was Arthur, though his eyes looked like they had seen too many secrets and buried too many bodies.

Caleb stared wide-eyed at the marble foyer, the crystal chandelier hanging three stories overhead, and the sweeping double staircase carved from imported mahogany.

"Is this... is this really where we live now?" Caleb whispered, clutching his faded backpack tighter against his chest.

"For now," Noah said quietly, keeping his guard up. He hadn't forgotten the cold, calculating glare Julian Sterling had given them in the back of the car. The billionaire hadn't spoken a single word during the entire forty-minute drive from the parking garage. He had spent the whole time tapping away on a secure tablet, reviewing encrypted financial ledgers.

An hour later, the federal judge—a man who looked entirely too comfortable accepting late-night phone calls from billionaires—arrived at the manor.

In the wood-paneled study lined with leather-bound books that looked like they had never been opened, the adoption papers were signed. Julian Sterling scratched his signature across the bottom of the documents with the same gold fountain pen he used to sign multi-billion-dollar mergers.

"It is done," Sterling announced, tossing the pen onto the mahogany desk. He looked across the desk at the two boys, who were now legally his sons. "From this moment on, you carry the Sterling name. But understand this: in my world, weakness is a capital offense. Tomorrow morning at six o'clock, your real education begins."

"What about Grandma?" Noah demanded, stepping forward. "You promised she’d get the best care."

"Her transfer to the VIP wing at Mercy Grove was completed an hour ago," Sterling replied coldly, tapping his tablet screen. "She is resting comfortably under the care of the city's top geriatric specialist. And your old trailer? I had my team buy the land and bulldoze it an hour ago. There is nothing left for you back there. Your old lives are dead."

Caleb gasped, tears springing to his eyes. "You burned our home down?"

"I upgraded it," Sterling corrected flatly. "Arthur! Take them to the east wing. Have the tailors fit them for proper clothes. And throw those rags they're wearing into the incinerator."

As Arthur led the dazed twins down the long, dimly lit hallway of the east wing, Noah felt a cold knot twist in his stomach.

They were safe from the county caseworker. Their grandmother was safe in a hospital bed.

But as Noah glanced back over his shoulder, he caught a glimpse of Julian Sterling standing alone in the study, staring at the silver flash drive on his desk under a single harsh desk lamp, a dark, calculating smile playing across his lips.

Noah realized with a jolt of pure terror: they hadn't escaped a trap. They had just walked into a bigger one.
