Chapter 8 - The Digital SiegeThe clock on the wall read 3:45 AM.

The security guards patrolling the east wing had a routine—every forty-five minutes, they stopped at the end of the corridor for a three-minute cigarette break outside the service balcony.
Caleb sat cross-legged on his bed, his fingers flying across the custom mechanical keyboard he had assembled from spare parts in the manor's electronics lab. Lines of green code cascaded down the screen of his tablet.
"I've looped the hallway security feeds," Caleb whispered, his eyes locked on the monitor. "To anyone watching the monitors downstairs, the hallway looks completely empty. The cameras are playing a recorded loop from two hours ago."
Noah stood by the door, holding a heavy brass candlestick he had unscrewed from the hallway table. His muscles were coiled tight, ready for violence.
"Are you sure about the master office firewall?" Noah asked, his voice barely audible.
"Sterling thinks he's the smartest man in the world," Caleb replied without looking up. "He uses the same encryption algorithm for his private wall safe that he used for his corporate server in 2022. It took me twelve minutes to crack it."
Caleb hit the enter key with a sharp, definitive click.
Across the hall, deep inside Julian Sterling’s private master study, a heavy electronic click echoed through the wall safe hidden behind a nineteenth-century oil painting. The reinforced steel door popped open.
"Got it," Caleb whispered. "Let's move."
The boys slipped out of their suite like ghosts. They didn't take the stairs; they moved with silent precision, sliding past the loop-blinded cameras until they reached the heavy oak doors of Sterling’s master study.
Noah pushed the door open. The room smelled of expensive cologne, old paper, and cold ambition.
Inside, the wall safe stood wide open. Inside sat three heavy velvet bags, a stack of bearer bonds, and a secondary flash drive labeled PROJECT ICARUS.
"That's it," Caleb said, rushing over to the safe and snatching the flash drive. "This drive contains the proof of Sterling's insider trading, tax evasion, and the illegal acquisition of the software assets that built his entire fortune. If this hits the SEC and the international press, his empire vanishes by sunrise."
Suddenly, the overhead lights in the study clicked on with a blinding, harsh glare.
"I wondered how long it would take you little rats to gnaw through my walls," a cold, smooth voice drawled from the doorway.
Noah and Caleb whipped around.
Julian Sterling stood in the doorway, wearing a silk bathrobe over his pajamas. He wasn't holding a gun. He wasn't panicked. He was holding a sleek black remote control, and a slow, mocking smile curled across his lips.
"You really thought you could outsmart me?" Sterling chuckled, stepping into the room and tossing the remote onto his desk. "Did you honestly think I didn't monitor every keystroke on your study terminal, Caleb? I watched you crack my firewall three hours ago. I let you do it."
Noah stepped in front of Caleb, raising the heavy brass candlestick like a club. "Stay away from him!"
Sterling laughed aloud, a rich, booming sound that held zero warmth. "What are you going to do, boy? Bash my head in? Go ahead. But the moment I die, an automated dead-man's switch triggers on my servers. Within sixty seconds, the life support machines keeping your precious grandmother alive at Mercy Grove will be automatically disconnected."
Noah froze. The heavy brass candlestick slipped from his trembling fingers, clattering loudly against the hardwood floor.
"You... you bastard," Noah whispered, tears of pure rage burning his eyes.
"Business is business," Sterling said, stepping closer, his eyes flashing with cruel triumph. "Now, hand over the flash drive, get back to your rooms, and maybe—just maybe—I'll let the old woman draw breath for another week. If you're good boys."
Caleb gripped the flash drive behind his back, his fingers trembling. It looked like they had lost.
May you like
Except Julian Sterling had made one fatal miscalculation.
He didn't know what Caleb had been doing while Noah was distracting him at the door.
