Chapter 3 - The Safe Deposit Box and the Hidden LegacyWhile Ryan squirmed under the weight of his own cowardice, Detective Vance laid out a stack of documents on the metal table.

Among them was a handwritten journal belonging to Linda. It wasn't just a diary; it was an accounting ledger of cruelty. Page after page detailed how Linda and Ryan had systematically targeted Emily from the very day they discovered she was pregnant with an heir to the Bennett name.

“The girl is too strong-willed,” one entry from three months prior read. “Her father is a colonel with too many connections. If she ever gets back to him, Ryan’s inheritance from the trust fund is jeopardized. We must isolate her completely. Make her look crazy so that if she speaks out, no one will believe her.”

Ryan stared at the pages in horror. "Where... where did you get this?"

"Linda’s house," Vance said smoothly. "When we executed the search warrant, we found her trying to shred it in the kitchen sink. Fortunately, modern paper shredders aren't as smart as the people building them."

Meanwhile, three floors up in the executive suite of the precinct, Emily was resting in a secure medical holding area. A team of top obstetricians, personally brought in by Colonel Bennett from the military hospital, were monitoring her and the baby.

"Vitals are stabilizing, Colonel," the lead doctor announced, stepping out of the examination room to brief James. "She’s severely malnourished, and the chronic stress has taken a toll, but the baby is a fighter. With proper nutrition and immediate cessation of trauma, she’s going to carry to term."

James closed his eyes, offering a silent prayer of profound gratitude to a God he hadn't spoken to since his wife passed away years ago. He walked over to the cot where Emily lay, her pale face looking achingly small against the white pillow.

"Dad?" she whispered, her voice cracking. "Are they... are they going to let him out?"

"Never," James said, his voice dropping into a register of absolute, unshakeable finality. "Neither of them will ever see the outside of a cell again. And as for the divorce and custody? My legal team from Washington D.C. is already en route. You and this baby are going to bear the Bennett name, and no one will ever touch a hair on your head again."

Emily reached out and gripped her father’s calloused hand, tears spilling over her lashes. "I was so scared, Dad. I thought... I thought I was going to die in that room."

"You survived because you're a soldier's daughter," James replied, kissing her knuckles. "Now, rest. Because tomorrow, we start destroying them back."
