Chapter 4 - The Mother-in-Law’s BetrayalIn Interrogation Room B, Linda Sterling was staging a performance worthy of a tragic opera.

Her hair, usually meticulously coiffed, was slightly disheveled. She dabbed at dry eyes with a pristine linen handkerchief, looking every bit the aggrieved, misunderstood matriarch.
"I don't know what kind of conspiracy my son’s father-in-law is cooking up with these corrupt local cops," Linda sniffled, looking directly at the recording camera. "I am a pillar of this community! I volunteer at the historical society! We coddled that ungrateful girl. We gave her a home!"
The door opened silently. Detective Vance walked in, tossing a heavy manila folder onto the table.
"You can drop the Oscar-worthy performance, Linda," Vance said, pulling out a chair and sitting down opposite her. "Your son already sang like a canary. He told us how you coached him on how to strike Emily without leaving permanent facial marks, and how you managed her daily routine of psychological degradation."
Linda’s act melted away instantly. Her face hardened into a mask of pure venom. "My son is a weak fool. He couldn't tie his own shoes without me. Ryan did what needed to be done to protect our family name from a girl who was clearly unfit for motherhood."
"Our family name?" Vance chuckled darkly. "Let’s talk about your family name, Linda. Specifically, the offshore accounts registered under your maiden name, funded by systematic embezzlement from the charity foundation you ran."
Linda’s breath caught in her throat. Color drained from her face. "That... that has nothing to do with this."

"It has everything to do with this," Vance said, leaning forward. "Because when we raided your house, we didn't just find Emily’s medical records. We found the financial paper trail showing how you and Ryan were planning to declare Emily legally incompetent, institutionalize her in a private psychiatric facility upstate, and quietly siphon off her mother’s multi-million dollar trust fund."
The silence in the room became suffocating. Linda realized the trap had snapped shut completely. There was no escape hatch, no legal loophole, and no wealthy friends to bail her out. Colonel James Bennett didn't just want justice—he wanted total, unmitigated annihilation.
