Chapter 9 - A New Dawn at the Bennett EstateSix months later, the spring breeze rolling off the Virginia hills carried the scent of blooming dogwood flowers across the sprawling lawns of the Bennett family estate.

Inside the nursery, bathed in warm afternoon sunlight, a tiny baby cooed softly in a handcrafted crib. The crib had been built by Colonel James Bennett himself during the long nights while Emily was recovering.
Emily stood by the window, watching her father outside in the garden. The formidable, unyielding military commander was currently pushing a stroller back and forth along the paved walkway, humming a tuneless military cadence under his breath to keep his infant grandson asleep.
A soft knock sounded at the bedroom door, and the family doctor stepped in, smiling warmly. "Checkup complete. Little James is growing like a weed. Hundredth percentile for weight and height. He’s got your strength, Emily—and his grandfather’s stubbornness."
Emily laughed, a rich, musical sound that hadn't been heard in these halls for years. "Thank you, Doctor. For everything."
"You don't thank me, my dear," the doctor said gently. "Thank your father. I’ve seen a lot of men break when their children are hurt. Colonel Bennett didn't break. He mobilized."
Later that evening, after the baby had finally drifted off to sleep, Emily walked down to the study where her father sat by the fireplace, reviewing old logistics maps and military history books.
James looked up, removing his reading glasses, and smiled as his daughter pulled up a chair and sat beside him.
"Everything quiet upstairs?" James asked softly.
"He's finally asleep," Emily replied, leaning her head against her father’s broad shoulder. "Dad... I never got to properly thank you. For coming that day. For not believing their lies."

James wrapped a strong, comforting arm around her shoulders, pulling her close. "You’re my daughter, Emily. I spent my whole life defending a country, but my most important mission was always protecting you. You never have to hide behind a blanket again."
Emily looked into the crackling fire, feeling the profound warmth of absolute safety surrounding her. The nightmare was over, the villains were behind bars, and her future—and her son's—was brighter than she had ever dared to dream.
