Chapter 8 - The Verdict and the Final SentenceThe jury deliberation lasted a remarkably short time—just under two hours. In the face of undeniable audio recordings, medical forensics, financial ledgers, and federal wire fraud documents, no reasonable jury could have reached any other conclusion.

As the jury foreman stood to read the verdict, the tension in the courtroom reached a fever pitch.
"On Count One: Felony Domestic Assault and Unlawful Imprisonment... Guilty," the foreman read clearly. "On Count Two: Conspiracy to Commit Institutional Fraud... Guilty." "On Count Three: Federal Wire Fraud and Grand Larceny... Guilty on all counts."
Ryan closed his eyes, his head dropping into his cuffed hands as a muffled sob escaped his lips. Linda let out a sharp gasp, her fingernails digging deep into the wooden table until her knuckles turned white.
Judge Vance cleared his throat, looking down from the bench with severe gravity.
"Ryan Sterling, for the crimes of domestic violence, unlawful imprisonment, and financial fraud, this court sentences you to twenty-five years in federal penitentiary without the possibility of parole for the first fifteen years."
The gavel struck again.
"Linda Sterling, as the mastermind behind the conspiracy to defraud, isolate, and systematically abuse the victim, you are sentenced to thirty years in federal penitentiary."
The heavy oak doors of the courtroom swung open, and federal marshals immediately stepped forward, grabbing both defendants by the shoulders. As Ryan was being hauled away past the front row, he caught sight of Colonel Bennett’s steely gaze.

Ryan tried to mutter something, but the marshals shoved him forward, guiding him down the hallway toward a destiny he had so callously earned.
Outside the courthouse, flashbulbs blinded the press corps as Colonel Bennett walked out arm-in-arm with Emily, who had insisted on attending the final verdict. She walked tall, her head held high, glowing with the quiet strength of a survivor who had reclaimed her life.
