Chapter 6 - The Hospital Room ConfrontationThree days later, Emily was resting in a private, high-security recovery suite at the military medical center. The room smelled of fresh tulips that James had ordered flown in daily.

A soft knock sounded at the door, and Detective Vance stepped inside, holding a secure tablet.
"How are you feeling today, Mrs. Sterling?" Vance asked politely.
Emily offered a small, weary smile. "Better, Detective. The doctors say the baby is doing well. But... I keep feeling like this is all a dream. Like I'm going to wake up and still be in that room."
"You won't," Vance assured her, pulling up a chair. "In fact, I have some news that might help you sleep a little better tonight. Your mother-in-law had a visitor this morning."
Emily tensed slightly, her fingers gripping the blanket. "Linda?"
"Linda’s lawyer tried to negotiate a plea deal," Vance explained, a satisfied smirk playing on his lips. "She wanted to pin all the physical abuse entirely on Ryan in exchange for a lighter sentence on the financial charges. But when Ryan found out his mother threw him under the bus, he retaliated."
"How?"
"He handed over a stack of audio recordings he’d secretly taken of Linda coaching him on how to gaslight you, isolate you, and manipulate your legal documents," Vance said. "Mother and son are currently tearing each other apart in their respective cells. The prosecution doesn't even need to build a case anymore; they're doing it for us."
Just then, the door opened further, and Colonel Bennett walked in carrying a stack of legal documents tied with a red ribbon.
"Well, sweetheart," James said, a warm, proud smile breaking across his weathered face. "The preliminary financial audit just came through. Sterling Global Logistics has been seized by federal receivers. Their bank accounts have been frozen, and the mortgage on their mansion is currently being foreclosed by our legal team."
Emily stared at her father, wide-eyed. "You... you took everything from them?"
May you like
"I only took back what they stole from you," James corrected gently, placing the heavy ribbon-tied folder on her bedside table. "And more importantly... the emergency custody and divorce filings have been officially processed and signed by a federal judge. As of twenty minutes ago, you are a single, independent mother bearing your maiden name, and neither Ryan nor his mother will ever have legal standing near you or your child again."
A profound sense of weight lifted off Emily’s chest. For the first time in over a year, she took a deep, full breath without fear.
