Chapter 1 - THE SECRET TENANT IN THE WALLS

The heavy brass lock clicked. The sound vibrated through the raw drywall, echoing in the tense silence of my ruined living room. Mason looked as if he might faint. His skin had turned a sickly shade of gray, his eyes darting frantically between me, his mother, and the cheap white door.

The door swung open slowly.

I expected a burly contractor. I expected a family friend with a toolbelt. Instead, a young woman stepped out into the dust-choked hallway.

She couldn't have been older than twenty-four. She wore an expensive silk robe that clearly didn’t belong in a construction zone, and her eyes were red and puffy from crying. But what caught my breath—what made Linda Hale let out a sharp, strangled gasp—was the baby bump visibly stretching the silk fabric of her robe.

"Mason?" the girl whimpered, rubbing her eyes. "Is the noise over? The workers said they were done for the day."

"Oh my god," Linda whispered, her perfectly manicured hand flying to her mouth. She staggered back against the kitchen island, dropping the thick white envelope. "Mason... who is this? What is going on here?"

I stood perfectly still. The pieces of the puzzle were spinning in the air, crashing down around me with terrifying clarity. Mason hadn't just built a wall to divide my house for "family privacy." He had built an apartment. A secret, isolated wing inside the home I bought with my own blood, sweat, and tears.

"Babe, let me explain," Mason choked out, stepping toward me with his hands raised. "This is Chloe. She’s... she’s a friend. She needed a place to stay."

"A friend?" I laughed, a sharp, cold sound that cut through the room like a razor. "You built a soundproof wall, changed my locks, and spent a hundred thousand dollars of your mother's money to hide a pregnant 'friend' in my office while I was away on a four-day business trip?!"

"Mason Thomas Hale!" Linda roared, her country-club poise completely evaporating. She grabbed her son by the front of his gray hoodie, shaking him. "You told me you married her! You told me this girl was a tenant paying you rent to buy into the Hale family estate! You told me this house was yours!"

Chloe looked terrified, looking between all of us. "Wait... Mason? You said this was your house. You said your ex-wife was refusing to leave, but that the courts awarded you the front half of the property!"

I stared at Chloe. The sheer scale of Mason’s deception was breathtaking. He had lied to his wealthy, elitist mother to extract a hundred thousand dollars for "renovations." He had lied to his pregnant mistress, telling her I was a bitter ex-wife occupying his property. And he had violated my home, my sanctuary, to build a literal cage for his secrets.

"Get out," I said. My voice wasn't loud, but it carried a weight that made everyone freeze.

"Chloe, go back inside," Mason pleaded, his voice cracking. "Maya, please, let’s just talk in the car—"

"I said, get out," I repeated, walking over to the front door and throwing it wide open. The bright afternoon sun flooded the entryway, illuminating the thick layer of drywall dust coating everything. "All of you. Out of my house."
