Chapter 6 - THE LEGAL TRAP IS SPRUNG

Linda stared at me, the color draining from her face for the second time in twenty-four hours. She looked back into her grand foyer, then stepped out onto the porch, closing the door behind her.
"What do you mean, a notary stamp from my husband's company?" she whispered hoarsely.
I threw the photocopies of the forged deed and the bank statements onto the patio table. "Mason used the corporate notary stamp from Hale Development Corp to legitimize a fraudulent property transfer. That doesn't just put Mason in jail, Linda. That drags your husband's multi-million-dollar construction firm into a criminal investigation for real estate fraud. Imagine what that will do to your family’s reputation when it hits the local news."
Linda collapsed into a wicker chair, staring at the evidence. Her son hadn't just been reckless; he had been stupid enough to leave a paper trail leading straight to his family’s crown jewel.
"What do you want?" she asked, her voice broken.
"I want three things," I said, leaning over the table. "First, I want a written, notarized confession from Mason admitting to the forgery and identity theft, witnessed by your family attorneys. Second, I want a cashier's check for $20,000 to replace the savings he stole from my account. And third, I want your crew back at my house tomorrow morning to tear down that wall and restore my living room to exactly how it was before I left."
"And if Mason refuses to sign?" Linda asked.
"Then I press charges, the news gets the story, and Hale Development Corp goes down with him."

Linda closed her eyes, a heavy sigh escaping her lips. She was a ruthless woman, but she was a businesswoman first. She knew when she had lost.
"Get in my car," she said, opening her eyes. "We're going to the office."
