Chapter 5 - RECKONING AT THE HALE ESTATE

"Stay right there," I said, raising the crowbar in my hand. My voice didn't waver. I had faced worse things in my life than a desperate coward with a bottle. "You forge my signature on a deed, Mason? You stole my savings?"

Mason looked at the crowbar, then down at the papers in my hand. He let out a low, bitter laugh and set the decanter down on the kitchen island. "It doesn't matter what you found, Maya. The quitclaim deed was filed electronically on Friday while you were boarding your flight. As of right now, on paper, I own half this house. You can't evict me. You can't sell it without my permission. We are partners."

"A forged document is void ab initio," I said, quoting the legal terms I had memorized when buying the property. "It means nothing in the eyes of the law."

"Good luck proving it in court while you're drowning in debt," Mason sneered. "My mom might be mad at me, but she won't let a Hale go to prison. Her lawyers will tie you up in litigation for years until you're bankrupt and begging me to buy you out for pennies."

He smiled, that smug, entitled expression returning to his face. "So here's what's going to happen. You're going to pay my mom's invoice. You're going to let Chloe move back into her half of the house, and you're going to behave yourself. Otherwise, I'll ruin you."

I looked at him, feeling a strange sense of calm wash over me. The fear was gone. The shock was gone. All that remained was a cold, calculating determination.

"We'll see about that," I said.

The next morning, I didn't go to work. I drove straight to the Hale family estate—a massive, gated mansion in the wealthiest part of the city. I didn't care about the security gates; I followed a delivery truck through the entrance and parked right on their pristine gravel driveway.

I marched up to the front door and pounded on it until Linda Hale opened it herself, looking exhausted and disheveled.

"What are you doing here?" Linda snapped, trying to close the door.

I jammed my foot in the frame. "Your son forged a quitclaim deed to steal my house. He used a fake notary stamp from a company your husband owns. If you don't help me destroy him by noon today, the FBI is getting a call about interstate bank fraud and document forgery. Let's talk."
