Chapter 3 - LINDA’S FURIOUS BETRAYAL

"911, what is your emergency?" the dispatcher's voice echoed through the ruined kitchen.
"Maya, hang up!" Mason lunged for my phone, but I stepped back, my eyes warning him that if he touched me, the charges would get a lot worse.
"Yes, hello," I said clearly into the phone. "I’ve just returned to my property at 414 Maple Street. There are intruders inside my home who have performed unauthorized construction and are refusing to leave. One of them is threatening me."
"We have officers in the area, ma'am. They are en route," the dispatcher replied.
I hung up and looked at the trio in my kitchen.
Linda Hale looked as if she had just swallowed broken glass. The realization that her precious, golden-boy son was a fraud, a liar, and a criminal was finally sinking in. She looked at the white envelope on the counter—the invoice for a hundred thousand dollars—and then looked at Mason with pure, unadulterated fury.
"You miserable little parasite," Linda breathed, her voice shaking with a rage that terrified even Mason. She stepped up to him, her polished nails digging into his arm. "I took out a line of credit for this! I told your father that you were finally settling down, that you were a partner in a real estate asset! You used me to fund your mistress's apartment!"
"Mom, I did it for the family!" Mason begged, crying now. "Chloe's family didn't want her! I had to put her somewhere, and Maya was always working—"
"Don't you dare bring my name into your mouth," I interrupted.
Chloe stepped forward, her voice trembling. "Mason... you told me your mom bought this house for us. You told me Maya was just a squatter."
"He lied to all of us, Chloe," I said, looking at the young woman with a flash of genuine pity. She was a victim in this twisted game too, groomed by a man who parasiticly fed on women's stability. "But right now, the police are coming. If you want to avoid getting arrested for trespassing, I suggest you pack your bags and get out of my sight."
Linda snatched her designer purse off the counter, her face a mask of cold fury. "The lawyers will be contacting you, Mason. Not for the house. For my money. I will strip you of every dime you have left."

She turned to me, her aristocratic pride shattered but her posture stiff. "I am sorry for the damage to your home, Ms. Maya. It will be dealt with."
"You're damn right it will," I said. "And you can take your invoice with you."
