Chapter 1 - THE ASHES OF MERCERThe heavy double doors of the Holloway estate clicked shut behind Claire, sealing away the sound of Vanessa’s triumphant laughter. Outside, the Lake Michigan wind tore at her coat, smelling of rain and the bitter iron of autumn.

The black town car waited at the foot of the circular drive. Martin Hale held the door, his posture rigid. As Claire slid into the leather interior, the interior light illuminated the gray leather folder resting on her lap.

"To the city, Mrs. Mercer?" Martin asked softly through the partition.

"Not yet, Martin," Claire said, her voice steady despite the adrenaline singing in her veins. "Take me to the warehouse district. To Pier 42."

Martin paused, his eyes meeting hers in the rearview mirror. A flicker of something resembling deep, earned respect crossed the old man's face. "The container from Antwerp has cleared customs, ma'am. It has been waiting for your signature."

"Then let's go claim what's mine."

As the car glided down the winding estate road, away from the glittering, ignorant warmth of the Holloway mansion, Claire opened the folder. Inside lay a single, crisp document printed on heavy parchment—the birth certificate of a legacy Grant Holloway had spent nine years trying to bury.

He thought she was a dependent. He thought her maiden name—Mercer—was just a quaint footnote from a family that had lost its fortune in the steel crash of 2008.

He didn't know that the Mercer name hadn't vanished. It had merely gone underground, buying up distressed industrial debt, quietly accumulating shares of Holloway Industries' primary logistics providers, and waiting for the exact moment the crown prince of Lake Forest became too arrogant to look down at his own foundation.

Her phone buzzed on the seat. A text from Leonard Price, the family attorney: Claire. Please call me. Grant didn't read the addendum on page 41. The cross-collateralization clause... you own the primary debt.

Claire silenced the phone, dropped it into her bag, and looked out at the storm-drenched skyline.

Grant wanted a war. She was going to give him an eviction notice.
