Chapter 4 - THE ARCHITECT OF RUINThe silence in the boardroom was absolute. You could hear the muffled hum of the city far below and the frantic, shallow breathing of Grant Holloway.

"You're lying," Grant hissed, his voice trembling as he clawed his way toward the edge of the table. "You're just a quiet girl from a broken family. I picked you up out of a damp apartment in Evanston! I made you! I gave you my name!"

Claire didn't flinch. She didn't even blink.

"You didn't make me, Grant. You misread me," she said, her voice soft, carrying a lethal weight. "When we met in that apartment, my grandfather was liquidating his assets to survive a federal investigation—an investigation your father’s company engineered to ruin us. You thought I was a charity case. You thought saving me would make you a savior."

She stood up slowly, smoothing the lapels of her jacket.

"Instead, you brought the executioner into your bed."

Vanessa stepped forward from the doorway, her voice shrill with rising panic. "Grant, do something! Call security! Have this—this woman dragged out of here! She’s trespassing!"

Leonard Price cleared his throat, adjusting his glasses. "I wouldn't do that, Miss Reid. Security answers to the majority stakeholder now. And as of ten minutes ago, the security contract, along with the building lease, belongs to Mercer Capital."

Arthur Vance buried his face in his hands, muttering curses under his breath. "The addendum... page forty-one. You left the primary lien on the logistics network open during the divorce settlement, Grant. You told your lawyers not to read it because you were too busy gloating."

Grant stared at Claire, his chest heaving. The man who had laughed while the ink dried on the divorce papers was gone, replaced by a terrified stranger realizing he was entirely naked in a freezing room.

"Please," Grant choked out, his arrogance crumbling into dust. "Claire... we were married for nine years. We shared a home. We can work this out. We can—"

"We can do nothing," Claire interrupted coldly. "Starting today, every account is frozen. Every asset is audited. And every executive who helped cover up the Holloway family’s fraudulent accounting practices over the last decade will be handed over to federal investigators by sundown."

She turned and walked toward the door, pausing just long enough to look at Vanessa.

"And as for this house," Claire added smoothly, "you have forty-eight hours to clear your ivory dresses out of my master closet. I’m turning the estate into a corporate archive."
