Chapter 7 - THE TRIAL OF THE FALLEN PRINCEThree months later, the federal district courthouse in downtown Chicago was a media circus.

Flashbulbs popped like lightning storms as Grant Holloway was led up the stone steps in handcuffs, flanked by federal marshals. His expensive charcoal suit was replaced by a standard orange jumpsuit; his once-impenetrable arrogance had been replaced by a vacant, haunted stare.

Inside the courtroom, the gallery was packed with former investors, betrayed board members, and financial journalists eager to witness the execution of a corporate dynasty.

At the prosecution table sat the special federal receiver appointed to dismantle Holloway Industries.

And in the front row of the gallery, sitting alone in a tailored navy coat, was Claire Mercer.

Grant was led to the defense table. As he sat down, his hollow eyes scanned the courtroom. They landed instantly on Claire.

For a fraction of a second, a flash of pure, unadulterated venom flared in Grant’s eyes. He tried to stand, to shout across the courtroom, but his court-appointed attorney pulled him back down by the arm, whispering frantic warnings into his ear.

The judge entered. The gavel struck.

"United States versus Grant Holloway," the clerk announced. "Case number 2026-CR-8841."

The charges were staggering: wire fraud, securities manipulation, obstruction of justice, and systemic asset concealment. As the prosecutor methodically read through the indictment—detailing how Grant and his father had systematically looted employee pension funds and falsified collateral evaluations—the courtroom fell into a stunned, heavy silence.

Grant didn't look at the judge. He kept his eyes locked on Claire.

She didn't look away. Her expression remained calm, balanced, and completely devoid of triumph. She wasn't celebrating his fall; she was simply watching a ledger balance out.

When the judge asked the defendant if he had any statement before the court issued its remand without bail, Grant stood up, his voice cracking with bitter desperation.

"Your Honor... I was set up," Grant pointed a trembling finger toward the gallery, toward Claire. "It was a conspiracy! She married me under false pretenses! She engineered the debt! She stole my company!"

The judge silenced him with a single, icy glare.

"Mr. Holloway, the court has reviewed thirty years of financial records. The only thing that was stolen was the future of hundreds of honest workers whose lives your family destroyed. You built an empire on sand, and the tide has come in."
