Chapter 3 - THE GHOST IN THE BOARDROOMThe glass-walled executive boardroom on the fortieth floor of the Holloway Tower felt suffocating.

Grant slammed his briefcase onto the mahogany table, glaring at the panicked faces of his board members. Vanessa stood nervously by the door, uninvited, her socialite poise fracturing under the weight of the morning news.

"Find out who runs Mercer Capital!" Grant roared, slamming his fist onto the table. "Buy them out! Offer them double! I don't care if it's a hedge fund in New York or a syndicate in London, we crush them!"

The heavy boardroom doors clicked open.

A woman walked in.

She wore a charcoal tailored pantsuit that commanded the room before she even spoke. Her dark blond hair was worn loose, falling past her shoulders with an effortless, sharp elegance. She carried no folders, no notes, and no apologies.

Leonard Price, the family attorney, trailed a step behind her, holding a briefcase like a nervous clerk.

Grant froze. The color drained entirely from his face, leaving him looking hollow, like an oil portrait left out in the rain.

"Claire?" Grant whispered, the word tasting like ash in his mouth.

Claire did not look at him. She walked straight to the head of the table—the heavy, leather-bound chair that had belonged to Grant’s father, and before him, his grandfather.

She pulled the chair back and sat down.

"Good morning, gentlemen," Claire said, her voice cutting through the heavy silence of the room with crystal clarity.

Arthur Vance stammered, gripping the edge of the table. "This... this is an executive session! You have no business here, Claire. You signed your shares away in the settlement!"

Claire turned her calm, devastating gaze toward the CFO.

"I signed away my marriage, Arthur," she said quietly. "I never signed away my birthright."

She gestured to Leonard, who stepped forward and dropped a thick stack of legal bindings onto the table right in front of Grant.

"Allow me to introduce myself properly," Claire said, resting her hands flat on the polished wood. "I am Claire Mercer. Managing partner and majority shareholder of Mercer Capital. And as of 8:00 AM today, I am the controlling owner of Holloway Industries."

Grant stumbled backward, his knees hitting the edge of a leather chair. "That's impossible. Your family lost everything in the crash. You didn't have a dime when we met!"

"My family didn't lose everything, Grant," Claire said, leaning forward, her eyes narrowing with a terrifying, cold intelligence. "We simply realized that the best way to destroy a predator was to let him gorge himself on debt until he was too heavy to run."
