Chapter 17 - The Ripple Effect

News of Sergio’s definitive sentencing and the exposure of his financial frauds eventually made its way through the extended family network. For months, the phone calls had stopped entirely as aunts, uncles, and cousins processed the shock of what had been hidden right under their noses.

Then, on a sunny Thursday afternoon, the doorbell rang.

Elvira opened the door to find Aunt Carmen standing on the porch, holding a modest basket of fresh figs from her garden. Carmen’s eyes were lowered, her expression uncharacteristically hesitant.

“May I come in, Elvira?” Carmen asked softly.

Elvira stepped aside, offering a quiet nod. They sat at the kitchen table—the very table where secrets had been buried for generations.

“I didn’t call you during the trial,” Carmen admitted, staring down at her hands. “None of us did. We were cowards, Elvira. We knew what Sergio was like for years, and we just looked away because it was easier than fighting him.”

Elvira looked across the table, feeling no anger—only a deep, weary clarity. “We all looked away, Carmen. That was our culture. That was our trap.”

“I came to tell you that my son—your cousin Miguel—is going to law school in Mexico City next month,” Carmen continued, a small smile breaking through her tension. “And he told me something yesterday that made me proud. He said he wants to specialize in protecting victims of domestic coercion. He said he learned it from watching how Mariana stood up for little Lucía.”

Tears welled in Elvira’s eyes. She reached out and grasped Carmen’s hand. “Tell Miguel we’re proud of him. And tell him never to let anyone tell him that keeping the peace is more important than telling the truth.”
