Chapter 19 - The Echo of Silence

The evening air in Guadalajara brought the rich scent of blooming jasmine and woodsmoke from neighboring barbecues. But inside the Chapalita house, the atmosphere was entirely peaceful. There were no raised voices, no forced smiles, and no walking on eggshells.
Raúl sat in his rocking chair, reading a historical biography, while Elvira finished clearing the dinner dishes without a single trace of resentment in her movements.
Mariana sat across from them on the sofa, helping Lucía pack her school bag for Monday morning.
“Mom?” Lucía asked, looking up from her pink notebook with wide, curious eyes.
“Yes, my love?” Mariana replied, brushing a strand of dark hair from her daughter’s forehead.
“Why don’t we ever visit Uncle Sergio anymore?”
The living room went quiet for a fraction of a second, but it was a comfortable, grounded silence—not the suffocating tension of the past.
Mariana looked at her parents, then back down at her daughter, holding her gaze with absolute honesty.
“Some people live in the dark, Lucía, because they are afraid of the truth,” Mariana said softly, taking her daughter’s small hands in her own. “We don’t visit him because we choose to live in the light. And in the light, nobody ever has to hide who they are or be afraid of someone who wants to hurt them.”
Lucía nodded thoughtfully, digesting her mother’s words with the quiet wisdom of a child who had seen enough of the world to know what safety truly meant.

“I like the light,” Lucía decided, hugging her stuffed rabbit tightly against her chest.
“Me too, my sweet girl,” Mariana smiled. “Me too.”
