Chapter 11 - The Neighborhood Echoes

Suburban neighborhoods in Guadalajara have long memories, and the sudden disappearance of Sergio Morales from the Chapalita block sent ripples through every household. For weeks, neighbors who used to lower their eyes when Sergio walked past now lingered by the freshly painted terracotta wall of Raúl and Elvira’s house.

Doña Carmen, the matriarch from across the street, finally caught Elvira by the gate one Tuesday morning.

“Elvira, I see the lawyer’s car is gone, but people are talking,” Carmen said, her voice dropping to a cautious whisper. “They say Sergio is trying to file appeals from the federal facility near Puebla. Is he coming back?”

Elvira didn’t flinch. The old fear that once made her hands shake was completely gone, replaced by a quiet, unyielding calm.

“Let him file whatever he wants, Carmen,” Elvira replied steadily. “The locks have been changed, the deeds are in our hands, and the courts know everything. If Sergio ever sets foot near this house again, the police will be waiting before he even reaches the front step.”

Mariana watched from the living room window, a warm smile touching her lips. Her mother had finally learned the hardest lesson of all: boundaries are not built to keep people out; they are built to protect your peace.
