Chapter 5 - Exile and Awakening

The arrest was swift, efficient, and entirely unceremonious. As the cuffs clicked onto Sergio’s wrists, his final shouts of denial and threats echoed down the street, bouncing off the whitewashed walls of the neighborhood houses.

Inside the living room, the atmosphere was suffocating. The illusion of perfection that had governed the household for decades lay shattered into a thousand jagged pieces on the floor.

Elvira was weeping quietly in the corner, clutching a decorative plate against her chest as if it could shield her from reality. Raúl sat motionless, staring at his empty hands. The relatives who had arrived expecting to scold Mariana for ruining a birthday party now sat in stunned silence, realizing they had been accomplices to a tyrant for years.

“Mariana,” Raúl finally croaked, his voice barely audible. “Are you… are you really going through with the charges?”

Mariana looked down at her daughter, who had finally stopped trembling and was quietly chewing on the edge of her stuffed rabbit’s ear.

“Every single one of them, Dad,” Mariana said. “And the property fraud investigation starts tomorrow morning. If you want to keep your home, I suggest you cooperate with the prosecutor’s office instead of covering for him.”

She turned toward the door, her thin folder clutched securely under her arm.

“Mariana, wait! Where are you going?” Elvira cried out, reaching out a trembling hand. “We’re your family! You can’t just walk away and leave us like this!”

“You made your choice the moment Sergio slapped my daughter and you told me I was ruining a party,” Mariana answered without stopping. “I’m going home. You should figure out how to live in the reality you created.”

She walked out into the bright Guadalajara sunshine, closing the heavy iron gate behind her with a definitive, metallic clang that signaled the end of an era.
