Chapter 10 - The Echoes of LoveOne year later, the anniversary of the storm arrived.

Michael stood on the second-story balcony of the mansion, looking out over the sprawling green gardens below. The city lights of Denver twinkled in the distance, no longer symbols of a cold, indifferent world, but lights of a city where he had found redemption.
From inside the bedroom came the sound of soft, joyful singing.
"Mamma’s voice... sounds like the rain on the window," Lily was reciting aloud, practicing her school poetry project for the next day.
Michael closed his eyes for a brief moment, feeling the phantom breeze of the past. He pulled Emily’s wedding photograph from his pocket, looking at her bright, smiling face one last time. He didn't feel the sharp ache in his chest anymore. Instead, he felt a deep, profound peace.
He hadn't just saved a little girl from the cold streets; she had pulled him out of a grave he had dug for himself. They had shared their grief, traded their emptiness for a family, and healed each other in the dark.
"Dad!"
Michael turned around with a start, a wide, genuine grin breaking across his face.
Lily stood in the doorway, wearing her favorite pink dress, holding two cups of hot cocoa with marshmallows spilling over the edges.
"Are you coming in or what?" she asked, tilting her head with that familiar, fearless spark in her eyes. "You're gonna miss the movie!"

Michael slipped the photograph back into his pocket, walking away from the shadows of the past and stepping fully into the blinding, beautiful light of the present.
"I'm coming, kiddo," Michael laughed, wrapping his arm around her shoulders as they walked back into the warmth of a home built on love, resilience, and a question in the rain that changed everything.
