Chapter 3 - Dawn of the StormMorning broke over Denver, but the gray clouds overhead matched the brewing tempest inside the Hartman estate.

Lily woke up wrapped in silk sheets that felt like clouds against her skin. The smell of fresh pancakes, scrambled eggs, and warm milk drifted in from the doorway. She sat up slowly, clutching Rosie. For a second, she thought she was dreaming—that she would wake up on the hard, cold park bench again.
"Good morning, Lily."
Michael stood in the doorway. He had changed into a fresh charcoal suit, his hair neatly combed, looking once again like the formidable tycoon he was. But the haunted, dead look in his eyes was gone, replaced by a gentle warmth.
"Are you... are you real?" Lily asked, her big eyes wide.
"I’m very real," Michael smiled, walking over to place a tray of food across her lap. "And so is your breakfast. Eat up. You need to get your strength back."
As Lily devoured the food with a desperate, heartbreaking hunger, a sharp, frantic knocking echoed from the front doors downstairs.
Michael frowned. He walked down the corridor and looked out the second-story window. Parked outside the iron gates were three police cruisers and a sleek, black vehicle marked with the logo of Colorado Child Protective Services (CPS). Flanking them were local reporters, shouting questions and shoving cameras against the iron bars.
Mrs. Gable rushed up the stairs, her face pale with panic. "Mr. Hartman! Downstairs! There are police officers and social workers at the door. They say someone reported an abducted child on the premises!"
Michael’s blood ran cold. Victor. He realized instantly who had leaked it.

Before Michael could formulate a plan, heavy boots echoed up the grand staircase. Two police officers, led by a stern-faced female CPS investigator named Agent Clara Vance (no relation to Victor, though equally ruthless), marched onto the landing.
"Mr. Michael Hartman?" Agent Vance demanded, flashing a badge. "We have received a credible report that you are harboring an abducted minor. Step away from the doorway, please. We are taking the child into protective custody immediately."
