Chapter 7 - The Hidden Truth of Lily's PastWhile federal agents swarmed Victor Vance's properties across the state, Michael rushed back from corporate headquarters to the secure pediatric medical center where Lily was currently staying under court-ordered protection.

He walked into the brightly lit hospital room, expecting to find her cowering or crying. Instead, Lily was sitting cross-legged on the bed, happily coloring in a large drawing book, while a social worker smiled warmly beside her.
"Michael!" Lily dropped her crayon and beamed, a genuine, radiant smile that reached her eyes for the first time.
Michael rushed forward, dropping to his knees beside the bed and wrapping his arms tightly around her small frame. He buried his face in her messy hair, holding on as if letting go would make the world shatter all over again.
"I missed you," Lily whispered, her tiny arms squeezing his neck. "The lady said bad men were trying to hurt you, too."
"The bad men are gone, Lily," Michael choked out, pulling back to look at her. "They’re not going to hurt anyone ever again."
Just then, the social worker stepped forward, handing Michael a sealed manila folder. "Mr. Hartman, while you were handling the corporate crisis, our social services division managed to run a full trace on Lily’s background using the hospital’s biometric database. What we found... changes everything."
Michael took the folder with a trembling hand. "What is it?"
"Lily isn't a random street orphan," the social worker said softly. "Her mother didn't just die five years ago. Her mother was Elena Vance—Victor Vance’s estranged younger sister."
Michael froze. The room seemed to spin. "Elena? Victor’s sister?"
May you like
"Yes," the social worker nodded. "According to the records, Victor cut her off and threw her out onto the streets years ago when she refused to sign over her inheritance to him. She raised Lily in poverty, hiding from Victor’s reach, until she passed away from an illness. After that, Victor’s men tracked Lily down, trying to eliminate the last living heir to the family fortune... which legally bypassed Victor and belonged entirely to Lily. She managed to escape them and lived on the streets ever since."
Michael looked back down at the little girl, who was innocently picking up her crayons again. The universe had played a cruel, beautiful, twisted joke. The man who had tried to destroy Michael was Lily’s own flesh and blood—and Michael had unknowingly found his dead wife’s parallel in the very child his enemy had tried to erase.
