Chapter 8 - The Trial of Victor VanceThree months later, the federal courtroom in downtown Denver was packed to capacity. Flashbulbs blinded the steps outside as high-profile defendants were led in chains.

Victor Vance sat at the defense table, his hair disheveled, his expensive bespoke suit replaced by an orange jumpsuit. His legal team had abandoned him once the federal RICO indictments, financial fraud charges, and child endangerment counts were unsealed.

At the plaintiff's gallery sat Michael Hartman—not looking broken, but resolute, wearing a sharp navy suit. Beside him sat Lily, wearing a brand-new pink dress, her hair neatly braided with a velvet bow, holding a brand-new, perfectly intact doll (though she still kept Rosie tucked safely in her pocket).

The judge banged his gavel. "All rise for the United States District Court."

The trial was swift and merciless. Backed by incontrovertible financial records, corporate whistleblowers, and the digital trail linking Victor to the trafficking ring and the smear campaigns, the jury didn't even take an hour to deliberate.

"On all counts of racketeering, financial corruption, and attempted endangerment of a minor, how does the jury find the defendant?" the judge asked.

"Guilty, Your Honor," the foreperson announced clearly.

Victor closed his eyes, his head dropping into his hands as the federal marshals stepped forward to cuff him and lead him away forever. As he was being dragged past the gallery, Victor caught Michael’s eye. He opened his mouth to snarl something, but stopped when he saw who was holding Michael’s hand.

Lily looked at her uncle not with fear or hatred, but with a quiet, powerful pity—the exact same look Michael had given her on that rainy park bench months ago. Victor turned away in shame and vanished through the courtroom doors.
