Chapter 4 - The House of Cards"She was not abducted," Michael said, stepping forward, his voice dropping into a dangerous, icy register that made the police officers instinctively put their hands near their holsters. "She was starving, freezing, and alone in a public park at midnight. I brought her in to keep her safe."

"That is a matter for the courts to decide," Agent Vance replied coldly, pushing past him toward the guest suite. "Harboring an unregistered minor without notifying authorities is a felony offense, Mr. Hartman. Given your well-documented psychological instability since the death of your wife, you are in no position to foster or shelter a child."
"Don't you dare touch her!" Michael roared, stepping in front of the door.
From inside the room, a terrified cry rang out. Lily flung the door open, tears streaming down her face as she clutched her broken doll. "Michael! Don't let them take me back! Please!"
Agent Vance didn't hesitate. She signaled the officers. "Take the child."
As one of the officers gently but firmly gripped Lily’s arm, the little girl screamed, kicking and crying out for Michael. Something inside Michael snapped. The grief that had paralyzed him for six months morphed into a blinding, unstoppable fury. He lunged forward to protect her, but the second officer intercepted him, slamming him against the hallway wall and clicking handcuffs onto his wrists.

"Mr. Hartman, you are under arrest for obstructing a government official and failure to report a found minor," the officer declared.
As flashbulbs suddenly flared from the end of the hallway—someone had let a reporter inside—Michael locked eyes with the camera. But as they dragged him away, he didn't look like a ruined man. He looked like a father going to war.
