Chapter 14 - The Bitter HarvestAustin didn’t move for nearly ten minutes. I stood there, watching him with the detached curiosity of a conservator examining a cracked foundation that could no longer be saved.

Eventually, a patrol car’s headlights swept across the brick facade, and the low rumble of a cruiser turning down the alley broke the silence.

Austin straightened up, wiped his face with a trembling sleeve, and looked at me one last time through the mesh. There was no anger left in his eyes—only a profound, hollow exhaustion. Without a word, he turned his collar up against the freezing wind and walked away into the dark Boston night.

I didn't call the police. I didn't feel pity.

I simply locked the inner deadbolt, turned off the entry lights, and walked back up to my desk.

The next morning, my attorney informed me that Austin had formally surrendered his remaining shares in our joint investments and signed away all rights to contest the divorce settlement. The legal battle was officially, permanently over.

There was no grand climax in a courtroom, no dramatic closing argument. Just the quiet, heavy thud of a chapter closing forever.
