Austin lost the brownstone, his partnership at the firm, and half of his remaining liquid assets. More importantly, he lost the reputation he had spent a decade cultivating. On the day the papers were officially stamped by the judge, I walked back into the Fairmont Copley Plaza.

I ordered a cup of black coffee at the lounge, sitting near the exact ballroom where three hundred guests had watched us pose under the chandeliers.

The lilies were long gone. The ballroom was quiet, filled with the soft murmurs of tourists and business travelers who knew nothing of the ghosts lingering in the corners.

My phone chimed. It was an email notification from my attorney.
