Chapter 18 - The Gala at the CliffsideThe awards gala was held in October inside the grand ballroom of the very Newport estate I had helped restore.

Instead of a heavy, suffocating silk crepe gown that dragged at my hips, I wore a sleek, midnight-blue velvet evening suit that moved with absolute freedom. There was no veil pinned to my hair, no camera flashes forcing me to pose for a narrative I didn't write.
When my name was called as the recipient of the Heritage Conservation Excellence Award, the applause rolling across the grand ballroom was thunderous, genuine, and earned.
I walked up to the mahogany podium, looking out over a room filled with brilliant architects, historians, and leaders who respected my work, my mind, and my boundaries.
"People often ask me why I chose architectural preservation," I began, my voice clear and steady echoing off the restored vaulted ceilings. "They think it’s about saving old wood, old stone, and forgotten paint layers from the past. But it’s deeper than that."
I paused, letting my gaze sweep across the brilliant room.

"Preservation is about truth. It’s about stripping away the cheap drywall, the rotting framing, and the deceptive facades that look magnificent on the surface, only to expose what is real, durable, and strong underneath. When a structure is built on truth, it doesn't just survive the storm—it outlasts it."
The applause that followed wasn't polite or performative. It was the sound of a room full of people recognizing an unshakeable reality.
