Chapter 4 - Blood and MoonlightGunfire erupted, shattering the pristine silence of the Caruso estate.

The sound was deafening, echoing off the high vaulted ceilings like rolling thunder. Shards of marble exploded from the pillars as Marco’s men returned fire, riddling the walls with bullets.
“Stay down!” Damian yelled over the roar of combat, his body acting as a human shield between us and the hail of bullets. Even while firing with lethal precision, his arm remained locked around my shoulder, shielding Leah’s head against his chest.
In the dim, flashing emergency strobe lights, Damian was a blur of calculated violence. Two of the tactical guards dropped instantly, hit with pinpoint accuracy. But there were too many, and they were pushing forward, trapping us against the back wall of the foyer.
“We have to move!” Damian shouted, his breath coming in sharp, controlled bursts. He grabbed my hand—a grip iron-clad yet surprisingly gentle—and pulled me toward a hidden door disguised as a wood-paneled wall behind the staircase.
“What about them?” I cried out, stumbling over my own feet as Leah wailed in absolute terror, burying her face in my neck.
“They won’t reach us,” Damian snarled. He punched a digital code into the wall panel, and the heavy steel-reinforced door slid open, revealing a dark, concrete corridor lit only by emergency strips.
As we tumbled inside, a bullet grazed Damian’s shoulder, tearing through his shirt and painting the white wall with a streak of bright crimson.
“Damian! You’re bleeding!” I gasped, horror gripping my chest.
“It’s nothing,” he gritted his teeth, slamming a heavy manual override button that locked the steel door shut just as a barrage of bullets hammered against the other side. The thick metal held, sealing us inside the subterranean bunker.
Leah was sobbing hysterically now, small, shivering convulsions racking her tiny body. I sank to the cold concrete floor, pulling her into my lap, pressing her face against my chest, and rocking her back and forth.
“Shh, baby, I’ve got you. Mama’s here. I’m never leaving you,” I whispered, tears mixing with the sweat and dust on my face.
Damian dropped to one knee beside us. The bullet wound in his shoulder was bleeding heavily, soaking his white dress shirt, but he didn’t even look at it. His dark, intense eyes were fixed entirely on the two of us—on the child who had finally found her voice, and on the woman he had wronged simply by existing in the same world as his enemies.
“Clara,” Damian said, his voice raw, stripped of all arrogance and power. He reached out a trembling hand, hovering just inches from my cheek before pulling back as if afraid I would shatter. “I am so, so sorry.”
I looked up at him, the man the entire city feared, seeing a shattered father for the very first time.
“Sorry isn’t enough, Damian,” I whispered, my voice hard as glass. “They took my baby. They took two years of my life. If we survive this… you’re going to help me burn their entire world to the ground.”

Damian’s lips curved into a dark, dangerous, and absolute smile.
“Consider it done.”
