Chapter 8 - The AwakeningThe silence in the bunker returned, heavy and profound.

The monitors flickered with images of Marco Moretti being dragged away in handcuffs, his reign of terror ended forever. Viktor and the other security guards quietly filtered out into the outer corridors, leaving Damian and me alone in the dim, warm light of the command center.

I let out a long, shuddering breath, the adrenaline slowly draining from my veins, leaving a deep, aching exhaustion in its wake.

Suddenly, a soft rustling sound came from the corner sofa.

I turned quickly.

Leah was rubbing her sleepy eyes with the back of her tiny hand. She sat up slowly, clutching her worn velvet rabbit against her chest, and blinked against the bright lights of the bunker.

Her dark, expressive eyes—eyes that mirrored my own—swept across the room before locking directly onto me.

“Mama?”

Her voice was clearer this time. Stronger. No longer a broken whisper, but the sweet, musical voice of a little girl who knew exactly who she was holding onto.

My heart melted into a puddle of pure warmth. I rushed across the room, dropping to my knees beside the sofa, and scooped her up into my arms, burying my face in her soft curls as hot tears of pure joy spilled down my cheeks.

“I’m here, my sweet angel. I’m right here. Mama’s never going away,” I sobbed softly, kissing her forehead, her cheeks, her little hands over and over again.

Leah giggled—a bright, beautiful sound that I had never heard in my entire life—and wrapped her tiny arms tightly around my neck, resting her head against my shoulder.

I looked up.

Damian was standing a few feet away, watching us. The fierce, untouchable mafia boss was gone. In his eyes glistened unshed tears, and a soft, breathtakingly tender smile curved his lips.

He slowly walked over and knelt down beside us on the rug.

For a moment, neither of us spoke. The air between us was heavy with a new kind of history—not one forged in blood and lies, but in survival, truth, and a love that had defied the darkest corners of the underworld.

Damian reached out, his hand trembling slightly, and gently touched Leah’s foot.

To my absolute astonishment, Leah didn’t flinch. Instead, she turned her head, looked at Damian with those same piercing dark eyes, and reached out her free hand, lightly touching Damian’s cheek.

“Dada,” she whispered softly.

Damian closed his eyes, a single tear escaping down his weathered cheek, and leaned his face into our daughter’s tiny hand.
