Chapter 5 - The Underground War RoomThe secret bunker beneath the Caruso estate wasn’t a panic room—it was a fully operational tactical command center.

Rows of high-definition monitors flickered with live satellite feeds of the city, security camera angles of the estate above, and encrypted data streams tracking underworld movements. Several heavily armed men—Damian’s personal inner circle—were already stationed at the consoles, spinning around in shock as the heavy steel door slid open to reveal us.

“Boss! You’re hit!” a burly man with a jagged scar across his jaw stepped forward, his eyes darting to Damian’s bleeding shoulder and then immediately to me and Leah.

“It’s a flesh wound, Viktor. Secure the perimeter of the safe zone,” Damian ordered, his voice brooking no argument. He walked over to a stainless-steel medical kit on the wall, ripped open a package of antiseptic wipes, and pressed them against his shoulder without even flinching.

I gently set Leah down on a plush leather sofa in the corner of the bunker. The little girl was exhausted from the trauma, her eyelids heavy, still tightly clutching her worn velvet rabbit in one hand and the hem of my apron in the other. I whispered soothingly until her breathing evened out into a deep, dreamless sleep.

When I turned back around, Damian was standing right behind me. He had thrown a black tactical vest over his blood-stained shirt, hiding the wound, but pale sweat beads still glistened on his forehead.

“She’s safe down here,” Damian said quietly, keeping his voice low so as not to wake Leah. “Marco and his men cannot breach this level. It’s reinforced with titanium alloy and independent power generators.”

“And how long are we supposed to hide down here while he burns your house to the ground?” I demanded, stepping up to him, my eyes burning with a fierce, unfamiliar fire. The frightened waitress from Caruso’s restaurant was completely gone. In her place was a mother whose cub had been stolen.

Damian looked down at me, a flicker of profound respect flashing in his dark eyes.

“We aren’t going to hide, Clara,” Damian said softly. He walked over to the main central console and tapped a few keys. A holographic map of the city’s financial district and underworld ports lit up the room. “Marco thinks he just delivered a fatal blow. He thinks we’re trapped, cornered, and desperate.”

He turned back to face me, his expression turning glacial.

“He doesn’t know that for the past three years, I’ve been quietly buying up every single debt, shipping route, and offshore account the Moretti family owns. I didn’t destroy them yet because I was waiting for the right moment. But tonight… tonight they gave me the only reason I ever needed.”

Viktor stepped up, handing Damian a heavy encrypted satellite phone. “Boss, the outer perimeter security feeds show Marco’s men are retreating toward the east wing courtyard. They’re regrouping for a heavy breach charge.”

Damian took the phone, his eyes never leaving mine.

“Let them try,” Damian whispered. He turned to me, his voice steady and resolute. “Clara, if you want your vengeance—if you want to make them pay for every single day they stole from you and our daughter—you stay right here by the console. I’m going to give you the keys to their destruction.”
