Chapter 1 - THE WATER GRAVE AND THE WATCHING EYES

The heavy metallic groan of the automatic pool cover sounded like a death knell echoing through the subterranean luxury spa. Inches of air remained—a desperate, shrinking pocket trapped beneath the sleek, waterproof barrier. Daniel’s lungs burned, not from a lack of oxygen, but from a blistering, all-consuming fury that threatened to shatter his sanity.
Beneath the murky, chlorinated water, his wife, Elena, hung suspended in a grotesque posture of execution. Her swollen belly, eight months pregnant with their long-awaited child, pressed against the cold marble floor. Her wrists were bound tight with industrial-grade zip-ties, and a thick iron chain looped around her ankle, securely padlocked to the heavy, ornate bronze statue of a weeping angel.
The key was down the drain.
Daniel surfaced, gasping for air in the rapidly diminishing clearance between the water's surface and the steel pool lid. Above them, through the thick, reinforced glass of the viewing gallery, a silhouette stood motionless.
It was Beatrice, his mother.
She wasn't panicking. She wasn't calling for help. She stood with her arms crossed over her impeccably tailored cashmere coat, looking down at her son and her dying daughter-in-law as if they were nothing more than a failed experiment in a petri dish.
"Mother! OPEN IT!" Daniel roared, his voice cracking with raw agony as he slammed his fists against the underside of the motorized cover. "OPEN THIS DAMN LID!"
Beatrice’s lips moved, muffled by the thick acoustic glass, but Daniel knew her words as well as he knew his own heartbeat. Weakness must be purged, Daniel. The bloodline cannot be tainted.
"Daniel..."
A weak, bubbling gasp broke the surface beside him. He spun around, plunging back under the water. Elena’s eyes were half-open, clouded with the agonizing fog of hypoxia. Bubbles escaped her pale blue lips. She was slipping away, dragging their unborn child into the abyss with her.
Daniel gripped the heavy bronze padlock with his bare hands. He twisted it, yanked it, screamed bubbles into the water as he tore at the shackle with his fingernails. It wouldn't budge. Solid titanium alloy. Designed to withstand hurricane-force pressures.
Think! Think, damn you!
He couldn't break the lock. He couldn't snap the chain. The zip-ties on her wrists bit deep into her purple, bruised skin. He looked up through the water at the shrinking pocket of air—now barely three inches deep. If he didn't pull her up, they would both drown in the dark. But she was anchored to the floor. To save her, he would have to rip her leg off or leave her behind.

Neither option existed in Daniel's universe.
With a feral snarl, Daniel hooked his arms beneath Elena’s shoulders, pressing his own mouth to hers to force the last ragged remnants of his oxygen into her lungs. Then, using every ounce of his athletic frame, he braced his feet against the bronze angel and pulled upward with catastrophic force, willing his muscles to tear before her chains would.
