Chapter 2 - THE MIDNIGHT RESURRECTION AND THE FALSE ALIBI

CLANG!

The sound of industrial machinery reversing echoed through the basement. The automatic pool lid snapped back open, retracting into its wall housing with a mechanical whine.

Fresh, humid air rushed into the enclosure. Daniel burst through the surface, coughing violently, dragging Elena’s limp body with him. He hauled her over the pool’s edge, scrambling onto the wet tiles, his chest heaving like a trapped animal's.

"Elena! ELENA!"

He pressed his palms against her chest, performing violent, desperate compressions, ignoring the cracking of her ribs as long as it meant restarting her heart.

Come on. Come on, please!

"Water!" Elena suddenly convulsed, arching her back as she vomited a torrent of chlorinated water onto the pristine marble. She gasped, a jagged, agonizing sound, clutching frantically at her swollen stomach. "The... the baby... Daniel, the baby..."

"I've got you. I've got you both," Daniel sobbed, pressing his forehead against her wet, shivering hair.

He looked up toward the gallery.

Beatrice was gone. The observation deck was completely empty, save for a single, discarded silver hairpin resting on the glass railing—the very pin Beatrice always wore in her immaculate silver bun.

Before Daniel could carry his wife out of the death trap, the heavy oak doors to the spa burst open. Security guards rushed in, led by Marcus, the estate’s head of security, followed closely by Beatrice herself, walking with the calm, unhurried grace of a grand dame attending an afternoon tea.

Beatrice’s eyes widened in theatrical horror. Her hands flew to her mouth in a masterclass of deceit.

"Oh, sweet heavens!" Beatrice shrieked, rushing down the steps. "Daniel! What happened? What have you done to her?"

Daniel froze, his blood turning to ice water. He looked from his mother’s weeping, trembling face to the empty pool drain where the key had vanished, and finally back to the woman who had tried to murder his family less than two minutes ago.

"You..." Daniel stood up slowly, towering over his mother, his eyes bloodshot and blazing with homicidal rage. "You psychotic bitch. You locked us in. You threw the key down the drain. You tried to drown your own grandchild!"

Beatrice recoiled, stepping back into the arms of the security guards with a look of profound, wounded betrayal.

"Marcus," Beatrice whispered, her voice trembling with manufactured fragility. "My son... he’s having a psychotic break. The stress of the company’s impending bankruptcy... it’s warped his mind. He tried to drown Elena in a fit of postpartum depression psychosis, and now he’s blaming me."

Marcus, a man whose loyalty had been bought and paid for by the Vance family fortune decades ago, looked at Daniel with cold, practiced pity.

"Mr. Daniel," Marcus said flatly, pulling out a pair of heavy steel handcuffs. "Step away from Mrs. Vance. You're coming with us."
