Chapter 4 - THE ALLY IN THE SHADOWS

The clock on the wall of the psychiatric ward ticked toward midnight.
Daniel hadn't slept. He sat cross-legged on the floor, his back against the cold wall, tracing a jagged scratch he had carved into the concrete with a loose screw from his bed frame. Sign the shares. Surrender your life. It was a checkmate. Beatrice held all the pieces: the money, the guards, the legal system, and the lives of the two people he loved most.
Suddenly, the overhead fluorescent lights flickered violently and died.
Emergency red backup strips buzzed to life along the baseboards, casting long, bloody shadows across the hallway.
Click. Buzz. Whir.
The electronic magnetic lock on Daniel’s isolation door gave a single, sharp spark, followed by a mechanical click. The heavy door swung open an inch.
Daniel leaped to his feet. He pulled the door open cautiously. The hallway was completely deserted. No guards at the nurse's station. No orderlies doing rounds. Just an eerie, heavy silence broken only by the dripping of a leaky pipe down the hall.
"Don't make a sound if you want to see your wife alive," a low, gravelly voice whispered from the darkness of the utility closet.
Daniel spun around. A figure stepped out from the shadows—wearing a dark security uniform, the badge ripped clean off. It was Marcus.
Daniel’s instincts flared. He grabbed Marcus by the collar, slamming him against the wall with a forearm across his throat. "You! You helped her lock us in the pool! Give me one reason I shouldn't snap your neck right now!"
Marcus didn't flinch. He didn't even raise his hands to defend himself. He simply looked at Daniel with a grim, exhausted expression.
"Because if you kill me, Elena dies within the hour," Marcus rasped, gasping for breath. "And your mother wins everything."
Daniel’s grip loosened slightly, though his eyes remained wild. "Explain. Fast."
Marcus pushed Daniel’s arm away, rubbing his bruised throat. "I’ve worked for the Vance family for twenty years, Daniel. I thought loyalty meant serving the head of the house. But when I saw what she did at that pool... locking a pregnant woman in a water tomb... I realized she’s a monster. She doesn't just control empires; she destroys human lives."
Marcus reached into his pocket and pulled out a heavy steel key and a secure encrypted satellite phone.
"Beatrice thinks she owns everyone," Marcus said quietly. "She thinks I’m her lapdog. But she made one fatal mistake: she threatened my family last week to keep me in line. A Vance never leaves loose ends, and I refuse to be her next casualty."
Daniel stared at the key and the phone. "Where is Elena?"
"She’s being prepped for an induced emergency C-section right now in the underground medical bunker beneath the main estate," Marcus said urgently. "Beatrice brought in a private obstetrician—a quack she owns—to deliver the baby early. As soon as the child is out, Elena is scheduled to be given a fatal dose of potassium chloride disguised as an epidural complication."

Daniel’s blood ran cold. The walls of the room seemed to close in around him.
"We don't have much time," Marcus continued, handing him a suppressed sidearm. "If we go through the front gates, we'll be dead before we hit the driveway. We need a war plan."
