Chapter 3 - THE CAGE BUILT FOR AN HEIR

The private psychiatric ward of St. Jude’s Hospital smelled of bleach, despair, and crushed ambition.
Daniel sat on the edge of a bolted-down foam mattress, staring at his hands. They were still stained with pool chlorine and the faint, haunting purple bruises of Elena's wrists. Forty-eight hours. Forty-eight hours since Beatrice framing him had locked him away behind reinforced security glass, cutting off all communication to the outside world.
They took Elena.
That was the terrifying reality that kept him awake. After the guards subdued him, Beatrice had whisked Elena away to the family’s private medical wing under the guise of "specialized prenatal care." In reality, Elena was a prisoner in her own home, guarded by mercenaries who answered only to Beatrice.
The heavy steel door of his isolation room clicked. The slot at the bottom opened, sliding a plastic tray of grey hospital food across the linoleum. But it wasn't a nurse who stood on the other side of the glass.
It was Beatrice.
She didn't wear a visitor's badge. She wore a tailored white Chanel suit, looking every bit the ruthless matriarch of a multi-billion-dollar pharmaceutical empire. She looked through the thick glass window as if inspecting a caged animal at a zoo.
Daniel lunged forward, slamming his fists against the glass. "Where is my wife? What have you done to her and my child?"
Beatrice pressed a button on the wall intercom. Her voice hissed through the speaker, cold and clinical.
"Sit down, Daniel. You are behaving like a child," Beatrice said smoothly. "Elena is resting comfortably. The doctors tell me the baby is healthy—though it will be born under the proper supervision. A child of the Vance dynasty cannot be raised by a commoner with no pedigree."
"She’s an orphan, Beatrice! Not a disease!" Daniel roared. "You hate her because she didn't come from old money! You hate that I chose love over your corporate mergers!"
"Love?" Beatrice let out a short, sharp laugh that held no warmth. "Love is a chemical imbalance that bankrupts empires. I built this family’s fortune on precision, control, and absolute purity. Do you really think I would let a nobody from the suburbs dilute our bloodline with her pathetic, middle-class genetics?"
Beatrice leaned closer to the glass, her eyes narrowing into slits of pure venom.
"Listen to me very carefully, Daniel. If you ever want to see your wife—or your precious child—again, you will sign over your voting shares of Vance Global to me tomorrow morning. You will sign the voluntary commitment papers, declaring yourself permanently mentally unfit. And you will disappear to our estate in the Swiss Alps."
"And if I refuse?" Daniel whispered, his voice dropping into a deadly, quiet register.
Beatrice smiled—a terrifying, razor-thin smile.

"Then tomorrow at midnight, Elena will suffer a tragic, fatal complication during childbirth. A mother’s heart simply gave out under the stress of her husband’s insanity. So tragic. So convenient."
The speaker clicked off. Beatrice turned on her heel and walked down the sterile hallway, leaving Daniel in total, suffocating silence.
