Chapter 12 - The Ghost in the Machine

We set up our new operational base inside a secure, repurposed data bunker nestled deep within the coastal hills, far away from city surveillance grids. Elena spent her days decrypting the seized hard drives, while Mason—using his innate aptitude for pattern recognition—began mapping the financial pipelines of the syndicate's shadowy financiers.

Late one night, the main server terminal flashed an amber warning light.

"Dad, look at this," Mason called out, spinning his chair around. "Someone is attempting to bypass our firewall using an encrypted proxy originating from a decommissioned offshore drilling rig."

I leaned over his shoulder. Lines of code scrolled down the screen in a dizzying cascade. It wasn't just a brute-force cyber attack; it was a digital signature—one I recognized instantly from the internal memos of my former tech firm.

"It’s Julian," I muttered, the blood draining from my face. Julian was my former chief technology officer, a man who had vanished the day Vanessa was arrested. We had assumed he fled the country, but the code proved he was operating right under our noses.

"He’s trying to trigger a remote wipe of our core patent database," Mason said, his fingers flying across the mechanical keyboard with practiced ease. "If he succeeds, our entire company assets evaporate in thirty seconds."

"Lock down the primary mainframe," I commanded, grabbing the secure tactical phone. "Elena, get the satellite uplink ready. We’re going to trace this signal back to its source, and this time, we bring the federal marshals with us."
