Chapter 9 - The House of Cards

Gasps echoed through the crowded courtroom.

Vanessa bolted upright from her seat, her face turning an ash-gray as she stared frantically at the giant screens projecting her treasonous words to hundreds of assembled lawyers, journalists, and spectators.

"This is a deepfake! Fabricated electronic terrorism!" Vanessa shrieked, pointing a trembling finger toward the back of the room. "Arrest him! That’s Arthur’s malware!"

Judge Holloway’s face turned a violent shade of crimson as he pounded his gavel so hard the wooden handle splintered. "Silence in my courtroom! Bailiffs, shut those monitors down immediately!"

Before the bewildered bailiffs could move toward the control panels, the heavy double doors at the back of the courtroom swung open with a resounding bang.

I stepped into the light, pulling off my custodial cap while Mason walked proudly beside me, holding the master tablet high like a standard of victory. Behind us stood Elena, flanked by two armed federal agents from the Department of Justice’s anticorruption division whom she had secretly contacted via satellite uplink an hour prior.

"The feeds aren't deepfakes, Your Honor," I announced, my voice ringing out clear and commanding across the silent room. "They are unedited master recordings retrieved from Mrs. Sterling’s personal cloud account, corroborated by financial audit trails proving systematic embezzlement, judicial tampering, and child endangerment."

Agent Vance of the DOJ stepped forward, flashing his federal badge directly at the bench before Judge Holloway could protest. "Judge Holloway, you are hereby requested to recuse yourself immediately due to active conflicts of interest tied to the Sterling Syndicate. Mrs. Sterling, you are under arrest for conspiracy, wire fraud, and child exploitation."

Chaos erupted.

Photographers from the press corps surged forward, flashbulbs exploding like lightning storms as federal agents moved swiftly down the aisle. Vanessa tried to bolt toward the side exit, but two marshals intercepted her effortlessly, snapping cold steel cuffs around her wrists as she shrieked obscenities into the air.

Marcus, sitting quietly in the back row trying to blend into the crowd, attempted to slip out the side door—only to find federal agents blocking his exit with drawn badges.

The house of cards had completely, irrevocably collapsed.
