Chapter 5 - The Siege at Dock 9

"They bypassed the perimeter alarms," Elena whispered, her face draining of color as she reached beneath her desk and pulled out a heavy tactical shotgun. "Which means someone inside the county grid gave them our exact coordinates. Arthur, they aren't here to arrest you. They’re here to sanitize the room."

The heavy steel door shuddered under the impact of a battering ram. The metallic shriek of stressed hinges filled the cavernous warehouse.

"Dad, what do we do?" Mason asked, stepping protectively in front of Lily.

"Get behind the server racks," I commanded, my heart pounding a frantic rhythm against my ribs. I grabbed a heavy iron wrench from a nearby workbench, positioning myself beside Elena. "If they breach, you take the kids through the maintenance tunnel in the back. It leads straight out to the water drainage culvert."

"And you?" Elena asked, chambering a shell with a sharp, metallic clack.

"I’m going to buy you time."

With a deafening explosion, the steel door blew inward, showering the concrete floor with sparks and twisted iron. Through the smoke strode three figures in tactical gear, their faces obscured by balaclavas, followed closely by a familiar, impeccably tailored figure.

Marcus stepped through the smoke, a smug, unreadable smirk playing across his lips as he brushed a speck of dust off his lapel.

"Really, Arthur? Running to an old conspiracy theorist in the slums?" Marcus chuckled, gesturing lazily to the armed mercenaries flanking him. "It’s pathetic how easily you danced to our tune. Drop the wrench. The game is over."

"You think you’ve won because you bought a few judges, Marcus?" I stepped out from behind the shadow of a server rack, keeping my voice steady despite the adrenaline roaring in my ears. "Every single financial transaction, every shell corporation, and every communication between you and Vanessa has been mirrored to an off-site federal server. The moment my heartbeat stops, an automated dead-man’s switch broadcasts the entire Sterling Syndicate archive directly to the FBI’s anticorruption division."

Marcus’s smirk faltered for a fraction of a second—just long enough for me to catch the micro-expression of genuine panic.

He hadn't accounted for a dead-man’s switch.

"You’re bluffing," Marcus hissed, signaling the lead mercenary forward. "Take him down. Fast. Make it look like a botched break-in."

The mercenary lunged forward, raising a taser, but before he could pull the trigger, a thunderous roar echoed through the warehouse. Elena’s shotgun blasted a hole through the concrete ceiling, raining debris down upon them and shattering their tactical composure.

"Move!" Elena roared, grabbing Mason by the shoulder while I scooped Lily into my arms.

We sprinted toward the back corner of the warehouse as gunfire shattered the air behind us, glass and metal exploding in a hail of chaotic shrapnel.
