Chapter 3 - The Trap is Set

The morning sun cast long, cold shadows across the polished marble floor of the Sterling corporate headquarters downtown. Margaret sat at the head of the boardroom table, her posture rigid, her expression a mask of chilling confidence. Around her sat three senior corporate attorneys and two board members loyal to her faction.

"Let’s review the situation objectively," Margaret said, her voice cutting through the tense silence of the room. "My son is currently blinded by emotional distress. He is neglecting his duties as CEO, and under Section 14 of our corporate charter, a temporary incapacitation clause can be invoked to freeze his executive powers."

One of the lawyers adjusted his glasses nervously. "Mrs. Sterling, bypassing Ethan to seize operational control without a court mandate is legally precarious. If he challenges it—"

"He won't challenge anything once he realizes what I have on him," Margaret interrupted with a cold smile, sliding a manila folder across the mahogany table. "My son signed a secondary indemnity agreement three years ago that exposes him to severe federal tax liabilities if audited. I hold the keys to that audit. He will step down voluntarily by noon."

"Are you sure about that, Mother?"

The heavy oak doors of the boardroom swung open with a loud bang.

Ethan walked in, his suit impeccably tailored, his expression as cold and impassive as carved marble. Behind him walked two federal marshals in full uniform, flanked by a high-ranking investigator from the state financial crimes division.

Margaret froze, her pen slipping from her fingers and rolling across the table. For a split second, panic flickered in her eyes, but she quickly forced it down, masking it with haughty indignation.

"Ethan. What is the meaning of this childish stunt?" Margaret stood up, smoothing her skirt. "Have you lost your mind, bringing outsiders into a private board meeting?"

"Sit down, Margaret," Ethan said, his voice devoid of any familial title.

"Excuse me?"

"I said, sit down," Ethan repeated, stepping closer as the federal investigator flanked him.

The investigator stepped forward, flipping open an official badge and laying a thick stack of documents directly in front of Margaret.

"Margaret Sterling, you are being formally summoned for an emergency injunction hearing regarding corporate fraud, forgery of legal documents, medical tampering, and conspiracy to commit attempted murder," the investigator stated clearly, his voice echoing off the glass walls of the boardroom.

A collective gasp erupted from the board members. One of the lawyers immediately pushed his chair back, distancing himself from Margaret as if she were carrying a plague.

"This is an outrage! A complete fabrication!" Margaret shrieked, her voice losing its polished composure as her face twisted into an ugly mask of rage. "My son is mentally unstable! He staged these documents! Look at him, he’s having a psychotic break!"

"Was I having a psychotic break two years ago when you paid off a mechanic named Frank Miller to cut the brake lines of a 2023 luxury sedan?" Ethan asked softly, leaning down so his face was inches from hers.

Margaret’s breath caught in her throat. The color vanished from her cheeks, leaving her looking like a corpse draped in silk.

"You... you searched the safe," she whispered, the words barely audible over the hum of the air conditioning.

"I found everything, Mother," Ethan said, straightening up and looking down at her with absolute disgust. "Every recording, every forged signature, every vile detail of your little master plan. The authorities already have the backups stored securely off-site. There is no escape, no legal loophole, and no bailout."

Margaret stared at him, her chest heaving as the walls closed in around her. For the first time in her life, her manipulation, her wealth, and her ruthless intellect had failed completely.

"You are destroying your own family," she spat out, venom dripping from every syllable.

"No," Ethan replied, turning his back on her as the marshals stepped forward to secure her wrists. "I am finally saving it."
