Chapter 4 - Shadows of the Past

While the legal storm raged downtown, sealing Margaret’s fate behind the locked doors of an interrogation room, the Sterling mansion was enveloped in a profound, healing quiet.
Ava sat by the floor-to-ceiling windows of the sunroom, a warm cashmere blanket draped over her legs. The afternoon sunlight washed over her face, highlighting the fading yellow bruises on her cheek and the quiet, radiant relief in her dark eyes.
Lena walked in carrying a silver tray with a cup of chamomile tea and a plate of fresh pastries.
"How are you holding up, Mrs. Ava?" Lena asked gently, placing the tray on the small side table.
"Better than I have in two years, Lena," Ava replied with a soft, genuine smile, taking the young maid's hand and giving it a squeeze. "If it wasn't for you... if you hadn't rushed into that study when you did..."
"Don't even think about that," Lena interrupted, shaking her head. "Mr. Ethan is the one who brought the storm. Have you heard from him?"
Before Lena could finish her sentence, the heavy French doors of the sunroom clicked open. Ethan walked in, loosening his tie, looking exhausted yet lighter than he had in years. He crossed the room quickly, dropping to his knees beside Ava’s wheelchair and resting his head gently against her lap.
Ava’s fingers instinctively tangled into his dark hair, massaging his scalp with soothing, tender circles.
"It's over," Ethan whispered, his voice thick with emotion. "She's being held without bail. The federal prosecutor has enough evidence to put her away for the rest of her life. The frozen accounts are being restored to your name, Ava... everything is yours."
"I don't care about the money, Ethan," Ava whispered, bending down to kiss the top of his head. "I just want our life back. I want us to be safe."
"We are," Ethan promised, looking up into her eyes. "And that's not all. When the investigators raided her private estate office this morning, they found something else hidden in the floorboards. Something related to the night of the crash."
Ava’s breath hitched. Her hands stopped moving in his hair. "What... what did they find?"
Ethan reached into his inner suit pocket and pulled out a worn, leather-bound journal. He placed it gently on her lap.
"It was your old personal journal from the year before the accident," Ethan said softly. "The one your mother-in-law stole from your childhood home and claimed was lost in the move. Inside it... there were medical notes from your independent doctor confirming something Margaret desperately tried to hide."
Ava’s fingers trembled as she flipped open the weathered cover. Pasted inside the first page was a folded medical report dated three weeks before the crash.
Her eyes scanned the words, and a single tear slipped down her cheek—not of sorrow, but of an overwhelming, long-denied truth.
"She didn't just want my inheritance," Ava whispered, looking up at Ethan in stunned realization. "She wanted to stop me from publishing my research findings on corporate embezzlement within Sterling Logistics—findings that proved Margaret had been bleeding the company dry for a decade."

Ethan stared at her in shock. The puzzle pieces finally clicked into one terrifying, cohesive picture. The crash wasn't just about an inheritance or an unwanted wife; it was an execution to protect an empire built entirely on lies.
"She thought she buried the truth in a wheelchair," Ethan said, his jaw tightening as he gripped her hands. "Instead, she dug her own grave."
