Chapter 5 - The Reckoning

The courtroom of the Federal District Court was packed to the gills. Flashbulbs blinded anyone stepping through the oak doors, and the gallery murmured like a restless ocean. Reporters from every major news network had flown in to cover what the media was already calling The Sterling Dynasty Collapse.

At the defendant’s table sat Margaret Sterling. Even in a beige prison jumpsuit, she maintained a rigid, icy posture, her chin tilted upward, refusing to look at the rows of cameras flashing in her direction. Her high-priced defense team whispered frantically around her, but Margaret ignored them. Her eyes were fixed entirely on the front row of the gallery, where Ethan and Ava sat side by side.

Ava was seated upright in a modernized, sleek power wheelchair, wearing a sharp white blazer, her head held high, exuding a quiet, unbreakable dignity. Beside her, Ethan held her hand with an iron grip, his expression resolute.

"All rise for the Honorable Judge Thomas Sterling," the bailiff barked.

The courtroom fell dead silent as the judge entered, adjusted his robes, and took his seat.

"We are here for the sentencing phase in the case of The United States versus Margaret Sterling," Judge Sterling announced, his voice echoing authoritatively through the chamber. "The defendant has been found guilty on all counts: federal financial fraud, forgery, obstruction of justice, unlawful medical endangerment, and conspiracy to commit premeditated assault resulting in permanent disability."

Margaret’s defense attorney stood up to offer a plea for leniency, citing her advanced age and decades of philanthropic contributions to the city. The judge didn't even let him finish.

"Sit down, counselor," Judge Sterling interrupted coldly. "Crimes committed with such calculated malice, fueled by greed and executed against a vulnerable member of one’s own family under the guise of maternal care, represent a profound betrayal of human trust. There is no room for leniency here."

Margaret’s attorneys slumped back into their seats in defeat.

The judge looked directly down from the bench, locking eyes with Margaret.

"Margaret Sterling, for your heinous crimes against humanity and your family, this court sentences you to serve forty-five years to life in the maximum-security federal correctional facility, with no possibility of parole for the first thirty years."

Bang.

The gavel slammed down, sealing her fate with a sharp, definitive crack.

Gasps rippled through the gallery. Microphones captured the sudden intake of breath from the defense table. Margaret’s head snapped toward the bench, her cold, unyielding mask finally cracking. For a fleeting second, raw panic and disbelief crossed her features. She turned around to look directly at Ethan, her lips moving silently as if pleading for a rescue that would never come.

Ethan didn't blink. He didn't look away. He simply stared back at the woman who had tried to destroy everything he loved, letting her see the complete and utter finality of her defeat.

As the armed guards stepped forward, clamping heavy steel cuffs around her wrists and hauling her away toward the holding cells, Margaret let out one final, bitter laugh that echoed chillingly off the courtroom walls.

The reign of terror was over. The Sterling empire had burned to the ground, but from its ashes, something far stronger was about to rise.
