Chapter 2 - The Mask Slips and the First Secret Unravels

"Security!" Lucas’s voice boomed through the vaulted ceilings of the hall, carrying the weight of a betrayed father ready for war.
Before Elena could bolt toward the grand exit, two broad-shouldered security guards blocked the double doors. The doors slammed shut with a heavy thud, sealing the room.
"Lucas, you can't do this to me! You’ll ruin my reputation!" Elena shrieked, her designer heels clicking frantically against the marble floor as she backed away. The pristine illusion of the fairy-tale bride was completely shattered; she looked cornered, desperate, and dangerous.
"Reputation?" Lucas let out a dark, humorless laugh that sent chills down the spines of everyone present. He walked forward, holding the legal document like a weapon. "You planned to steal my home, my legacy, and exile my daughter. Reputation is the absolute least of your concerns right now."
Elena’s father, a prominent local politician named Arthur Vance, pushed his way through the stunned crowd, his face purple with rage and humiliation. He marched straight up to his daughter and raised his hand, delivering a sharp slap across her cheek that echoed through the silent room.
"You ungrateful, manipulative little viper!" Arthur roared, his voice shaking with absolute mortification. "We gave you everything! You forged legal documents? You plotted against an innocent child?"
"Dad, stop it! You don't know what you're saying!" Elena cried, clutching her stinging cheek, her eyes flashing with a sudden, vicious malice. She realized she had nothing left to lose. If she was going down, she wasn't going down alone. She pointed a trembling, venomous finger straight at her father. "Don't act so high and mighty, Dad! You think I learned this manipulation from nowhere? Should I tell everyone here about the shell companies you used to embezzle funds from the city council?"
The ballroom went deathly, terrifyingly silent. Arthur Vance froze, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. Color vanished from his face as the tables turned once again.
Lucas watched the unfolding family meltdown with cold detachment. This wasn't just a failed wedding; it was the unmasking of a criminal syndicate disguised as high society. But as he looked down at the documents in his hand, a chilling realization hit him like a physical blow.
Legal documents of this complexity—forging custody agreements, transferring corporate assets, and pre-arranging international boarding school placements—take months, sometimes years, of meticulous planning. A novice couldn't draft this. A gold-digger acting on impulse couldn't pull this off.
Someone else was behind this. Someone with legal expertise, deep pockets, and a vendetta against the Miller family.

And then, Lucas noticed a small, distinct watermark embossed on the bottom corner of the contract: Vane & Associates Law Firm.
Lucas's heart stopped. Vane & Associates wasn't just any law firm. They were his own corporate legal counsel. And the senior partner heading that firm was none other than Marcus Thorne—Lucas's oldest, most trusted business partner and best man standing right at the altar.
