Chapter 4 - The Corporate Coup and the Empty Vault

The digital screen in Marcus’s hand flashed a bright green success notification.

"Checkmate, Lucas," Marcus declared, his voice echoing triumphantly across the grand hall. "All your board members voted unanimously via emergency proxy while you were busy playing hero in the bathroom. Your accounts are frozen, your corporate access has been revoked, and by morning, this entire estate will be seized by the bank to cover defaulted liabilities that I conveniently purchased last week."

Elena, seeing the tables turn back in favor of her co-conspirator, quickly scrambled to her feet. She brushed off her torn wedding dress and walked over to stand by Marcus’s side, her haughty expression returning. "You see, Lucas? You can't fight us. We hold all the cards now. Give us custody of the brat, sign the final settlement papers, and maybe we’ll let you keep your car."

Chloe let out a terrified sob, burying her face deeper into Aunt Sarah’s neck. "Daddy, don't let them take us away! Please!"

Lucas stood frozen for a moment. The magnitude of the betrayal hit him with crushing force. In less than ten minutes, he had lost his wedding, his company, his financial security, and nearly his daughter. The guests whispered among themselves, realizing that staying too close to Lucas might implicate them as well; several people began quietly slipping toward the exit.

Marcus smiled, basking in his apparent absolute victory. "Sign the papers, Lucas. Save yourself the humiliation of being dragged out by federal marshals."

Slowly, deliberately, Lucas stopped shaking. The initial wave of shock receded, replaced by a cold, calculating stillness. A strange, calm smile crept onto his lips—a smile that made Marcus’s triumphant expression falter just a fraction.

"Marcus," Lucas said quietly, stepping forward. "Did you really think I wouldn't audit my own company after what happened with Sarah?"

Marcus’s smile wavered. "What are you talking about?"

"You assumed I was blind just because I trusted you," Lucas replied, his voice steady and echoing clearly through the microphone clipped to his lapel. "You thought your automated proxy votes went through. But you forgot one tiny detail about Vane & Associates' primary server infrastructure."

Lucas snapped his fingers.

Suddenly, the massive projector screen behind the altar flickered to life. Instead of wedding photos, the screen displayed a live, real-time security terminal interface scrolling through lines of green code and bank transfers.

"No," Marcus muttered, his face instantly turning ashen. "That's impossible. I encrypted the offshore servers!"

"You encrypted them using a 2018 encryption key that I wrote myself," Lucas said smoothly, walking toward the screen. "Every single unauthorized asset transfer, every shell company you set up with Arthur Vance, and every forged signature on those corporate proxies has been automatically intercepted and redirected to a federal anti-corruption holding account."

The screen flashed red, displaying a massive federal seal followed by a bold text notification: TRACED AND FROZEN BY THE DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE.

The ballroom erupted in absolute pandemonium. Arthur Vance, realizing his own embezzled city funds had just been exposed live on a giant projector, collapsed backward into a folding chair, clutching his chest. Elena screamed, lunging forward to grab Marcus’s arm. "You said it was foolproof! You promised!"

Marcus shoved Elena away, his eyes wide with blind panic as he stared at the screen. "You set me up! You knew all along!"

"I gave you enough rope to hang yourself, Marcus," Lucas said coldly, walking right up to his former best man. "I found out about your embezzlement scheme three months ago. I just needed you to walk into the trap and sign your confession in front of two hundred high-profile witnesses and a live security feed."
