Chapter 6 - The Ghost from the Past

The ballroom, which had just begun to breathe a sigh of relief, plunged back into an eerie, suffocating silence.
Lucas stood up slowly, gently placing Chloe behind him as a protective barrier. His eyes widened in absolute horror as the woman stepped fully into the bright chandelier light.
It was Sarah—his late wife.
The woman whose tragic car accident they had mourned six years ago. The woman whose grave Lucas visited every single year on her death anniversary. The woman whose memory had been the guiding light of his life and the shield around his daughter.
She stood there, alive and breathing, looking not a day older than the night she supposedly died.
"S-Sarah?" Lucas choked out, his voice trembling violently. His knees felt weak, and for a terrifying second, he thought he was hallucinating from shock and exhaustion. "No... that's impossible. I identified the body. I buried you!"
Chloe peeked out from behind Lucas’s jacket, her eyes wide with confusion. "Mommy?" she whispered, taking a hesitant step forward.
Sarah smiled, but it was a cold, alien smile that bore no resemblance to the warm, loving wife Lucas remembered. She pulled off her wide-brimmed hat, letting her long dark hair cascade down her shoulders.
"You buried an empty casket, my love," Sarah said smoothly, her voice dripping with an eerie calm. "An open-and-shut case of arson and dental record substitution. Brilliant what money and the right coroner can buy when you want to disappear from a suffocating life."
"Disappear?" Lucas shouted, the grief and betrayal of six long years boiling over into explosive fury. "You abandoned us! You let me mourn you every single day! You let Chloe grow up without a mother while I tore myself apart trying to raise her alone! Why?!"
Sarah let out a soft, mocking sigh. "Because living with a boring, predictable tech entrepreneur in a suffocating suburban mansion was my personal hell, Lucas. I wanted wealth, power, and freedom on a global scale. But I couldn't divorce you without splitting the assets and losing custody battles. So, I staged my own demise, leaving you heartbroken, distracted, and completely vulnerable."
"And Elena?" Lucas suddenly realized, the horrifying puzzle pieces clicking together in his mind. "Elena wasn't just a random gold-digger. She was working for you all along!"

"Bingo," Sarah chuckled, stepping closer. "Elena is my half-sister. We engineered the entire plan years ago. I needed someone on the inside to infiltrate your life, groom Chloe into a convenient obstacle, and eventually execute the legal takeover of Miller Tech using Marcus as our unwitting corporate patsy. Marcus thought he was betraying you for his own greed, but he was just my puppet, too."
Lucas stared at the woman he had loved more than life itself, realizing that the monster who had just tried to destroy his family wasn't Elena or Marcus—it was the ghost of his own past.
